I can always go out in the bottom of a hollow somewhere on my property. That's probably where the deer are gonna be anyhow.
If its 20+mph I just go out and do some stalking. I've taken 4 doe and blew a 20yd shot at a nice buck, all on days that were very windy.
Depends on the size of my tree!! My first year ever bowhunting I recall a night when the wind was gusting like crazy. I ended up climbing my tree about 8 feet higher then I had my tree stand set, I wanted to see if it would be better hanging it higher because this particular stand was only around 12ft, but it had good cover. Right as I'm climbing down I had a decent buck within 15 yards. I ended up rushing the shot and shooting right underneath him. They move when its windy, just don't be climbing your tree when you should be hunting!
I am not sure (mph wise) what is too windy. My best night (sighting wise) last year was in 30 to 40 mph gusts. The only thing I did different was head to a short ladder stand that was more stable than any of my hang on sets.
I hate hunting In windy gusty days, a persons scent goes every which way so I won't do It. Stalking In cornfields does work well though In somewhat windy conditions.
When the National Weather Service says to go to my basement...otherwise we have some stands down at the bottom of huge ravines...trees barely move down there...and the deer like it on those days as well.
Living in the Panhandle of Texas, you either hunt windy days or you don't hunt very often. We get very few days in the 0-5mph and 10-15 more the norm with lots of 20+mph days throughout the season. For this reason, I hardly use any stabilizer on my bow and I always detach my quiver as I want as little wind resistance and a low profile set up as possible. I also purposely practice a lot in the wind. There are some trees I can't hunt and some I can.
If it's gusty, that's tough. I want to be out hunting, but if I cant' make an ethical shot, what's the point. If it's a steady wind, which is rare here, I can compensate some. I do practice in windy conditions too.
