So tomorrow I am thinking of hunting a spot where ive got some decent bucks on cam, but havent had time to scout all that much as its a new property. I have a SSE wind which is ideal for this stand as far as I can tell but for for the pm, but tomorrow I plan to hit it in the am. Ok so ill be hunting on the side of a hill looking down to a creek bottom with TONS of arcorns the bucks ill be hunting bed over the hill about 150-200 yds in some pines to my NW. My question is if my stand is on the side of the hill and the wind is blowing over the crest of the hill are my rising thermals reaching the top and being blown up and away/ back in my direction? Behind my stand the bucks come around and walk the side of the hill for a distance than come down around the point and skirt the creek side (hopefully walking by me at 20-35yds) Some pics in stand just cause im excited! First pic shows where they typically walk in Second pic shows my perferred shooting lane / where they cross the creek if they even do.
I would say it depends on the time of the day. If they come by first thing in the morning when the wind is usually dead, I bet you will be fine. If they come by say around 1-2 hours after sun-up, then you will probably be ok as well, given the thermals blasting up the hills which will counteract the wind to your back. The time where you will be vulnerable will be if the thermals have not been activated and the wind is blowing your scent from your back toward that creek. Just my thoughts. GOOD luck last!
Thanks for the input Brett I want my scent towards the creek it should be in the am then like you said once that sun hits the wind should blow my rising thermal up and away elimating my scent. Down low or a hill side is a tricky place to hunt but I think the conditions are right, but its hard to say.
Pretty decent morning had my first buck of 2011 in range decent 5 pt got a couple pics of him and sent him a good luck wish he prolly won't make it through rifle season but we will see. On my way out I spotted 3 does I turned around dropped my climber and did my first spot and stalk it was pretty cool experience to say the least. I followed the edge of the woods crawling on my hands and knees got to within 30 yds and waited 10 or so mins for a shot. I was about a sec away from letting it fly. She was looking in the opposite direction of me at 27 yds as I drew she turned I had my pin on the vitals and was about to send it but she bolted! Prolly could have pulled it off if I had my shirt on still but it was a humid morning. Oh well it was a cool experience none the less.
A sse wind because of the hill blows my scent east across the point once that happens the thermals go up the point but the south wind at the top of the ridge blows them up and away. Wasn't the best but it works
