When the wind says n nw does it mean it's blowing n nw or coming out of norther north west thanks brad
It's helpful to use a map of the property that has a north indicator. Accuweather provides an hourly breakdown of wind direction and temps. Just remember (as noted) the directions posted indicate where the wind is coming from and you want to be down wind of suspected deer movement. It's really quite simple with a map in your hand. Example: Wind from the north means you want to be in a location south of deer movement.
Just be careful though, I've found that what those weather sites say aren't always true. I'll go to a particular stand to hunt b/c the wind is SUPPOSED to be good for that stand that day and it's off. Always best to confirm wind direction in the field IMO.
Everyone is correct, it is where the wind is blowing from. There are many variables to consider at your hunting site though. Mountains and hills have profound effects on wind direction. They cause it to flow differently, sort of like water around a stone, and there are thermals to consider as well. Something else to look at on weather maps are the areas of high and low pressure, and weather fronts. Air moves toward low pressure and away from high pressure. It also moves parallel near the front line on the side the front is moving forward. The points and knobs on the line point in the direction it is moving. Play around with this site and you can get a good idea of the weather in your location. The second site defines what the flags mean. I use scout look. It's a must have for bow hunters in my opinion. Shows where the wind is blowing by the scent cone option. Check it out if you have a smart phone
Forgot to list this one. Good consolidated site for nearly any weather question you may have. Surface Maps & Observations :: Mountain Weather
