    Mountain lion spotted near Spooner
By Paul A. Smith of the Journal Sentinel
    Mar. 5, 2009 11:55 a.m.

A mountain lion has been spotted near Spooner and is currently being pursued by Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists.

The animal's tracks were initially spotted Monday by a homeowner in his yard near Trego, according to a DNR report. On Tuesday, a team of hounds followed the trail and treed the cougar.

DNR officials were then notified and took up pursuit of the animal Wednesday; attempts to capture the lion were unsuccessful, said Jim Bishop, DNR public affairs officer in Spooner, and are continuing Thursday.

Bishop said the wildlife officials intend to tranquilize the animal, take blood and hair samples, affix a radio-collar and then release it. The animal is described as a 130-pound male.

The mountain lion, also known as cougar, catamount and puma, has a large breeding population in the Black Hills of South Dakota and has been spreading east into Midwestern states in recent years. A male cougar was verified near Janesville last year; it was later killed by police in Chicago.

There is no hunting season for mountain lion in Wisconsin.

The photo below was taken by Matt McKay of the DNR.

That's nuts! My dad has a home in Trego. I wonder where they found the track at? Maybe he was trying to hit up some breakfast at The Prime. I  that place.

It looks like it has already been tranquilized in the first pic there. lol.
He's just chillin' in the tree. Quit buggin him, and he will go away. Might take a kid or something with him, but he will leave.

Yeah, my cabin is about 4 miles from Trego. That's awesome! I guess I'll have to stop using my catmint cover scent:confused:

My brother and uncle will have their cameras out there soon I suspect. It's one of the few fauna that we haven't gotten on film.

We try to hit up Wolf Point (on Gulf Lake along F) on occasion too. But, I'm not sure if its called that anymore?

The Dinner Bell used to be good way back in the day when I was a kid, but hasn't been the same in years. Coming from down here where you get a crappy breakfast for twice the price, going to the Prime is treat and a half. Their blueberry pancakes rock.

It is not hard to find a great breakfast in the northwoods.
This place in White Lake, Wi (30 Minute drive from shotgun eddys) has the best
french toast. They put a killing on you and if you go leave complaining not full
they make you sit right back down and fill up.

We had one attack and kill a big dog in his yard a couple weeks ago not too far from my house. DNR has always said they're not here. They did come out and confirm it was a big cat.... but then they say it was probably a tame one that escaped captivity somewhere. They don't want to admit they're here or they'll have to control and regulate and all that. Anyway, walking in or out of the woods in the dark takes on a whole new feeling when they tell you there's one up the road a few miles. This club I'm in has 1500 acres real close to where they attack happened. It's all wild and wooly country.
