Why do you hunt with a Traditional bow?

As for myself I have a few reasons why,

    1. It's simple equipment, not much to go wrong.
    2. The challenge Is Incredible.
    3. The thrill Is 100 times more then what my compound gave me.
    4. When I recover an animal taken with my recurve, the feeling Is over whelming and almost emotionable. I felt that before with my compound but nothing close to this!!
    5. It's me and who I am, It fits my style of hunting.

Well I haven't been at it for very long and I've only killed one feral hog so far, and that was with the recurve I gave away. But, I really enjoy both the simplicity of it and the added challenge. I do have to admit though that my confidence level is wanting. I haven't been taking my Kanga longbow out as much as I might like to. Because I haven't filled a tag YET this year I've been hunting with the compound mostly and even the muzzleloader some. Time is running out on my deer season and I need to put some meat in the freezer. At this late date I have to go with a more likely means. And frankly that bothers me some.

Simplicity is a big thing for me. Even the early compounds offered the archer the ability to take the bow apart and put it back together with a set of allen wrenches. I've found that the fewer thing to go wrong the better it is for me. I also realized that this style of shooting offers advantages in hunting situations. For me, there's a connection with our ancestors that I feel when this bow is in my hands. You rarely meet anyone, non-hunters too, that doesn't appreciate the look and feel of the equipment. IT'S FUN!!

It's what I've always shot for 45 years. Two years ago my wife bought a nice compound for me, complete with sights, whisker biscuit, CX arrows, release and all. I have to use it to hunt with Suburban Whitetail Management of Northern Virginia but I don't like it. I have about a dozen traditional bows that I hunt and shoot most of the time, they are so much more fun. AND they loook maaavalous...lol

    Here's some.

It sure don't happen over night that's for sure. The last 3 years I hunted with my compound I really wanted to get a recurve and hunt with that Instead but I was too nervous wondering If I could do It. Jeff, I was shooting recurves my whole life as a kid but It was still hard for me to make the transition from screwing around with one In the yard to actually taking one out and hunting with It. There was that mental thing with me too Jeff, everyone will have It. I think most traditional shooters will always have It a little as far as that goes. I know when Joe (BHF) shot his buck this last fall I was happy as hell for him and just as excited I think (well maybe not quite as excited as Joe but you get my point). The day you lay one down I'll be on cloud nine as well.

You just better let me know that morning, day, or evening when you get your 1st traditional kill!!

I have a problem having to take out the compound to hunt. I've shot recurves for the past 45 years. I only killed my first 2 deer this year with a compound. I felt like I was cheating. With a compound there's way too much to think about before the shot. With trad bows you see the animal, wait for it to get close enough, pick a spot, draw, release. With the compound I have to put the release on, usually stand up to take the shot, be able to judge the distance more accurately, hold the bow perfectly vertical, MAKE SURE I USE THE RIGHT PIN and pull the trigger on the release...whew. Then if your hunting in really cold weather if your gloves are too thick or you're wearing a hood it will throw your shot off. I never have these problems pulling a string with a tab. But I guess unlike many these days I was raised on recurves not compounds and it what you get used to.

They are just cool, simple, completely different feel and experience and I've yet to reach a full year of huntin' with mine. I am going to hunt bear with mine this spring. Can't wait.

I believe I will get an overwhelming sense of accomplishment should I be successful.
I started bowhunting that way & have "unfinished business"
It adds a whole different feel to stepping foor into the woods with this type of gear.

I just wish I could get a little more confidence to head to the woods a littel more often with the trad gear.

That goes for me too. The feeling is hard to describe but I like it. I too need to build my confidence level so I'll take the longbow out more often.
