I go with technology, medication and politics.

The advent of video games, sensationalizing while at the same time desensitizing.

Everybody likes to use Newtown as the example and bar setter as why things need to change with gun laws. Evil and scarey rifles with a black finish and accessories that make them even scarier.

What nobody wants to talk about, is that Adam Lanza was a sick and deranged millenial that killed his own mother to carry out the agregious act that he did.

They want to focus on the weapon, not the cause.

    We're in a new age.

The age where kids need the latest and greatest video gaming system. The latest and greatest first person shooting game, more realistic than ever.

The latest and greatest social media platforms that allow you to instantaneously send and recieve. Cyber bullying is becoming the newest big thing.

Kids are no longer living in a real world. Everything is virtual.

Medication is becoming more of a mask than a treatment, and once that mask comes off(stop taking the medication) the untreated demons come back to light more vicious than ever. We are becoming a take this every 12 hours and call when it is emoty for a refill world. Side effects from the medication or just wrong treatment altogether cause them to skip doses, stop taking or sell to those willing to buy.

Add in the dangerously changing political scene and the focus toward the younger generation and we are headed towards the worst times in American history.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, I am thankful my life(should I die of natural causes) is nearly half over right now. I would not want to be around in 70 or 80 years.

    Guns are not the problem.

Very, very well said. We are simply in a new age I think. I particularly liked the "Kids are no longer living in a real world. Everything is virtual." Comment... it's so true.

Unfortunately I'm part of that group. I'm glued to a computer screen at work for 8 1/2 hours a day. My phone is attached to my hip. Tv always on at home. Sad once I think about it.

I find this part funny and sad. Funny because one of the things that keeps the bond between myself and my grandmother is every week i go visit and most times we talk current events or whatever. She says all the time how glad she is that she is 80 and only has to deal with the idiots little longer. (Her words)

I'm 43, I use my phone as a computer more than my computer.

I use a lot of the same things as todays youth. I remember the times without it.

If I wanted to play a video game as a kid I had to have a selector switch rather than an HDMI cable. Turned to channel 2 or 3 not Input 1 or 2. Dust was the number one failure not a scratch or virus.

There's more to it than what I said. Upbringing and moral values being a significant value.

Too many of today's youth(dating back a time) are raised on the internet and video games. Can't be spanked, grounding these days is no video games for a week.

Back in my day, when I got grounded I was removed of everything. I got a room and a window. No video games, cell phones were called sattelite phones and only the super rich had those big ass bag radios. Hell, phones had pulse or tone dial. Call waiting and caller ID were years from being invented. I got to hear a phone ring and listen to the "no, he's grounded" reply while watching friends go by on the way to a missed kickball game.

Today's youth are spoiled not only by technology, but by law.

You can no longer discipline "your" child, and yes a child does belong to you until the age of 18. Their brashness is only second to their spoiling.

Bring discipline back and you will bring a more civilized society back.

Discipline is not abuse, but abuse is real. I have been a recipient of both, been part of the "system" and would change some aspects of my being brought up. Violence isn't a new generation thing, it's been here forever and will never go away.

So what are we to do Gary??? What is supposed to change??? Maybe we should start by not giving away participation trophies?!?! Maybe we should acknowledge that Marijuana is a mind-altering, drug that can cause a variety of mental disorders, or a variety of mental disorders to be exasperated??? Maybe we should acknowledge that our "Godless" society that the leftists are pushing for is part of the problem??? Maybe the problem is that we have games that assimilate mass media, and it warps people's minds??? Not sure which one to start with... Any idea... I've heard lots of debate over the Vegas thing elsewhere, the more than one shooter conspiracies, the "physically demanding" conspiracy, the security guard conspiracy, etc... I'm absolute that there was only one shooter, otherwise the aftermath would have been far worse, and shooting a weapon like that is only minimally physically demanding... I think the difficulty in our society we all have is that none of us feel that any specific news source is truly reliable... And what once was news, is now propaganda!!! Does Vegas bother me??? Absolutely, it leaves a great many questions and very few answers, and moreover, it leaves the sickening feeling of what is next... Will new gun legislation fix what happened in Vegas??? No!!! Will new gun legislation prevent a future similar attack??? Not likely!!! Would more concealed carry permits have helped in this tragedy??? Maybe, if there were someone in the hotel carrying who had a clue what was going on, and were able to go to the room and stop what was going on... Likewise, Sandy Hook could have potentially been stopped if there'd been a half dozen teachers who were permitted to carry... I know that answer to violence isn't always violence, but when gun violence of such cases occurs, reciprocal violence IS the only thing that stops it. But we really need to solve the problem of the HEART of these evil people who've done these terrible things... As far as the terrorists acts committed by Muslim terrorists, we know what that problem is, but we choose to ignore it, because acknowledging it for what it really is, would mean trending away from political correctness, to realism...

Not sure how much older I am than you, but I believe there is more narcissism than there used to be, and when narcissism meets reality they make a really ugly baby called Envy and there is no more poisonous destructive force in this world than envy.

It's not, its sad that this is what we have become. I have the resources to make this happen, others do not. So because you go to a poor school a child should not be safe? Learn in a safe environment? Makes me sad

It should be an example to you that government involvement inevitably leads to red tape. Shouldn't be a class thing. If it bothers you that bad support School Choice. Did wonders in DC.

I am 77 and spent 32 years in law enforcement. I have seen a lot of change and I did not do everything right by any means. Back when a family could make a living with the father working and the mother taking care of the house and basically raising the kids, things were a lot different. Then both parents went to work and someone else raised their kids for them, at least till early middle school. Kid was given the games, etc they wanted to keep them occupied rather than doing something with them. Discipline from the parents started a down hill slide fast. The kids didn't have any discipline and now that they are parents the trend gets worse. How can we expect to discipline our kids when we don't have any ourselves. When the parents don't show respect how can we expect the kinds to have respect. It became a down hill rolling snowball that just keeps getting bigger all the time. I could go on but I think I made my point.

So what is the solution? Not real sure. Not going to change the parent's idea if they don't want to be changed. We have physiologist that have pushed the "child abuse" over the cliff. Most have this piece of paper on the wall but have no common sense. That needs to change and let the parents and teachers discipline the kids beyond the "time out" that is not working. A good old fashioned butt spanking with an open hand would be a good place to start. No marks in 3 days it was discipline. End of statement. For those in the later teens + that are out causing problems, etc., along with school drop outs, they do 6 mo. in a boot camp where they learn discipline and respect. If they don't make it the first 6 mo they do another term. It would cost $$ but what are we spending on the problem now and not gaining anything? When was the last time you said good morning to a stranger on the street? Or held a door open for someone going out or following you in a business? Can you imagine the impact on a community if we all started doing that? Not going to solve all the problems but it sure would be a nice starting point.

I think first we need to quit making excuses. Doctors are telling parents the reason their kid misbehaves is because they have adhd or some other condition, here give them this drug. There are not any new conditions, they have always been around, difference is, in the past kids learned to cope with their conditions instead of depending on medication. It is going to keep getting worse, today a kid looks sideways at another and it is bullying. Sorry, but most of what kids face in school is critical for them developing into well adjusted adults. The more we bubble wrap them and "protect" them from everything, the less they are able to deal with adversity.
