Why must people use "half" when speaking deer age?

    Why isn't 1, 2 or 3 good enough? Why must it be 1.5, 2.5, 3.5?

When some one asks how old you are, do you break it down into years and months?

If you were to ask me how old I am, I definitely would not say that I am 31.5...

Fill me in here.... Why add the half?

    Good question...

I usually don't add a .5 when discussing ages of deer...Hell at this time of the year it would not even be correct to add a .5 would it? ...more like .33 :D

Heck I never even used the word age at all until I come upon all you Internet folks In 2007. I always used to say 1st rack, 2nd rack, 3rd rack, 4th rack, etc. Another term I never used either was Mature buck.

By the rut most deer are at the 1/2 way point. fawn = 1/2 yr old, yearling is now 1.5.... I dunno whay it's standardized year round. Probably because the only way people can "tell" how old a deer is, is by his rack in the fall.

    .... I'm 30 and 21/24ths by the way :tu:

I use both. Sometimes I say 4, sometimes 4.5. Depends who I'm talking to.

I would say, your guess is.........wrong.

    X2. Pretty bold claim

I sometimes say 1.5, 2.5, etc.. sometime whole numbers. Depends on how in tune the person is I'm talking too.

Deer are born in the spring. By the time hunting season rolls around deer are at the .5 stage. technically speaking, adding the .5 is the correct thing to do. During the summer, it would make more sense to say 1, 2,3, etc etc. Thats what I was taught in school and at work, and thats good enough for me. And come test time on deer jaws, if i only put 1,2,3 down; I get a big ol' X with a 0 right beside it lol.

It's so simple, it's stupid! When we as hunters see the majority of deer, its around October. Majority of deer give birth between April and July. Making that deer Approximately 6 months old. Or .5 years old...

Some of you are not understanding what I am asking. I know when deer are born. That is irrevelant to what I am asking you.

What answer do you want Buckeye? Do you want someone to say they add a .5 year because of their need to feed their EGO?

No. I am not sure how adding a .5 could even have any affect on ones ego?

Suppose because if you don't use half's it's hard to fully understand how old someone is saying the deer is...

Let's say a deer is truly 2.5 years old (because deer are actually born in the spring) - so does that mean people should use 2 (rounding down) or 3 (rounding up)? Seems easier if people just use the actual age... JMO

I use the half because.......... it's correct.

It's not like I have a limit on the number of letters or syllables I can use to describe a deer so if I see a 1.5 year old buck. I call it a 1.5 year old buck. No need to round up or down half a year.

None. Hunters can't bring themselves to say, "I killed a 2 year old buck" when the buck is actually 2.5 years old. They would never shortchange themselves that 6 months! They earned it. :)

Other animals are typically born year round (atleast ones that have their age discussed) so there would be no point to it. Deer are born every spring.

It is petty but it makes sense to me. I find myself typing it with the .5 but leaving it off in verbal conversations lol
