This laptop may be around 10 months old. Gives me the exclamation point thing telling me my memory is low quite often while on the web. Why, and how can I get it to stop? I have basically nothing on this computer. Like not even a dozen photos, no music etc etc... Not even sre if that is related or not?
What kind of laptop do you have? Ive never seen this happen. I had a dell for a couple years and never had a message like that pop up and I had tons of music and pictures. Now I have a Macbook with 750GB of space so I have a lot of free space that I probably won't fill up.
Normally that message is referring to crap that's running on the computer, not 'things' that are on your computer (like files, etc)... Toolbars are horrible, things like 'weather apps' and junk like that really eat resources.... Also things like Skype, messenger, etc just sit in memory eating resources... Try to kill the running tasks that you don't need... Go into your add/remove programs and uninstall those types of things is always a good idea... Also do a full reboot of your computer. Often times people just close their laptop lid and their computer goes into standbye or whatever - then you open it back up and all that junk is still running - just kinda keeps snow balling.... Running a malware scan on your system too can help... Shoot me a pm if you want more specifics...
I had that issue with my desk top. I think there were a lot of spy ware junk running on it despite me continuously trying to clean it up and fix it. Norton antivirus was about next to useless as far as I'm concerned.
As others have said, it has to do with what all is running on your laptop not the storage of your laptop. SDH gave a lot of good advice on it, not much to add in my opinion.
Assuming you have msft machine. A couple of things to check, you may need to google these, if you don't know how to do them: Clear temporary internet files in your Browser cache Empty the trash can on the computer Disable/don't use widgets like the post it notes, temp, etc Disable/remove programs like weather bug that run all the time. There is a lot more you can do by looking to remove programs you don't recognize or use, but you can also do a bit of harm if you aren't familiar with some core/needed software--many PCs ship with a bunch of FREE junky software. Similarly, if you find somebody familiar with the msconfig utility they can probably help you tremendously.
This is a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332. It is running Windows 8 (I hate windows 8) I have never used this computer for anything other than Net browsing. I have never used or downloaded Skype or widgets or anything like that. Another thing it will do is give me a little box in the bottom right corner that says Norton Performance Report "high memory usage by chrome"... Or something like that. Chrome will crash out on me somewhat regularly as well. I am a total novice when it comes to working on a computer. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. I do clean all the temp files and such. Also run The Norton stuff frequently.
It's referring to all the background programs you have running all at once. The number of programs running is using nearly all of the physical memory you have available. You can either do one of two things, go to Start > Run and type msconfig (press enter) to go to the Sys Cofig. Just uncheck the unecessary programs that automatically startup in the Startup tab. Disabled anything that you don't use on a regular basis like Microsoft Office, toolbars, iTunes, etc. The other thing you can do is increase the virtual memory, which uses hard drive space to act as additional memory. You have to know what you are doing here so if you tell me how much free space you have on your hard drive I could give you a recommendation. Lastly, you might want to run a program called CCleaner which cleans up your Temp folder and multiple different caches. The link below is to the download (use the free): https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
We tried google chrome once. It has the tendency to open a new tab every time you go to a new site. But it doesn't close the previous tab like IE does. Maybe you could check and see if that's what is happening.
good info here. malwarebytes will work wonders on your pc. also ditch norton. it is nothing but crap. go with avg or avast. both have free versions.
