In the words of Mark Kenyon "Because it is how I'm wired"...I honestly can say hunting doesn't feel the same with a gun in my hands when pursuing whitetails....perhaps that changes someday but until it does it is the thing I will grab 99.99% of the time.
Bowhunting allowed me to hunt the deer on the deers terms. From a summer feed pattern, transition into Oct, acorn drop and "the Oct lull", scrapes popping up, pre-rut, cruising...seek/chase, lock down, the frenzy that occurs when things start to wind down, winter feed pattern. Being in the game from bachelor group to bachelor group as it all comes full circle. I've killed mature bucks in every phase....though I don't hunt as hard as I used to, when I do hunt, I still choose to bowhunt.
I bowhunt because I like hunting in the mild fall conditions. Fall is my favorite season and I just enjoy being in the woods. Pursuing big game is just a plus. To be honest, I would take my rifle if it was legal.
This is a interesting question I bow hunt for the adrenaline rush that I get when I have a Deer 20yds from you and the biggest reason i bow hunt is to provide food for my family for the winter
I think it because I was raised in a family of hunters and that I watched Howard Hill and Fred Bear on TV as a young boy. From those shows I was compelled to learn archery.. one thing lead to another and here I am some forty years later shooting a bow and chasing my favorite game with my stick and string.
Simple answer for me. I never hunted at all growing up. I would shoot rifles and handguns at my grandparents farm but never went in the woods after deer. Started going out when I turned 27 with friends who had been bow hunting since HS and I got hooked even before shooting my first deer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
because you don't get to see this sleeping in on a Saturday morning! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I dont just bowhunt i gun hunt to, i get the shakes when i see a deer at 200 yards ,but when I stop getting the shakes when im rifle hunting then I will stop gun hunting and do just bowhunting.
back to the thread I bowhunt becauce it allows me to get in the woods ealier than if I would just gun hunt
I have to say the main reason I started to bowhunt is so I wouldn't have to wait until general gun season to hunt. Once I started learning and getting into it I have fallen in love with every aspect of bowhunting. I read (and recommend) How to hunt with the bow and arrow by Saxton Pope. It made me fall deeper in love with this ancient tradition.
Hunting, fishing, and camping is ingrained into my genes. I grew up doing it and I'll die doing it. It's fun and puts food on the table too!
I bow hunt because it's what drives me. It is the most spiritual thing I can think of. Being out there in nature, stalking through the woods, looking for signs and clues about the deer, trying to sneak up into their safe spot, putting myself 30 to 20 yards away from them and then trying to take the perfect shot. Then you have the experience of waiting for it to die and tracking it down, feeling thankful and blessed you were provided with a deer to fill the freezer. Heck even when I'm just practicing it seems as if the world melts away and all I care about at that moment and making a great shot.
I like vertical bowhunting because its challenging and success offers me great satisfaction and great memories and a larder full of low fat venison. I find it to be my most enjoyable hobby. No other outdoor activity or any shoulder fired means of hunting gives me the same thrill, nor is it near as challenging. Handheld, vertical bowhunting is what I enjoy most as it is the most difficult means of taking game because I have to supply so much of my own skills/talents to take an animal.
It just feels good to do it. The way we hunt has changed over the years but when it comes down to it, its one of the most relateable things we do today that we did in the beginning of time. Its the challenge and the stalk and the respect I have for wildlife in general. I've been hunting since I was 15 I'm now 24 and I still haven't gotten a deer. Yet I come back every year more determined to learn and gain knowledge and one day soon I hope, get that deer. Its just special. Archery clears my head and makes me happy
