Why do some states (especially Wisconsin) not allow using a bow during gun seasons? What is reason(s)? If a guy wants to use a bow why not let him?

I'm confused as to what the thought process and justification could possible be.

In Wisconsin they shut down the bow season ONLY for the gun season and then it starts right back up again the day after gun season ends. For the record, Wisconsin only stops the use of bows during the regular gun season and still allows it for special anterless hunts.

yea i'd like to know the answer too, however i doubt anyone here will have an answer. i think it's dumb, i'd love to be up in the tree with a bow while all the one hunting weekend a year guys are out pushing the deer.
i think that it is due to registration. some of the people that i've seen at the stations barely look at the deer and some haven't looked at all. if you add bow tags to the equation it would complicate things more and i think some idoits would wreck it by cheating or whatever. filling thier bow tag with a deer shot with a gun, that sort of thing. beyond that i see no reason why they don't allow it

Same in IL...now bow for the 7 days of Shotgun...but you can use bow during Muzzleloader season...and also the late Doe Only gun seasons...hmmm...not sure why.

Make the tags season specific instead of weapon specific.. If a guy wants to use a bow during gun season use the gun tag. What is the difference?

I don't see that being a reasonable argument....... EVEN FOR THE DNR... :p

That is how it works here in MD. We can hunt with a bow during ML/firearms but must use a ML/firearms tag. We also get 2 buck and 10 doe tags per each season, bow, ML and shotgun, for a total of 36 deer (4 countys are unlimited does).

That's curious. That doesn't make sense to me. You can use a bow during firearm season in Michigan, but you have to wear the hunter orange.

In the CWD zones you can still use your bow during gun season as long as you wear the required blaze orange. The early and late doe only gun hunts though must only shoot a doe. Last year the bow season in CWD went from September 18 to January 9. T

Are you sure during "regular" gun season you can? I would have to look again but I was pretty sure it should archery season is closed statewide during the regular 9 day gun season.

Why would the gun hunters care? What could their argument be?

Your right.... I just looked it up. So just more proof it should be okay. If it is safe and okay in CWD areas why not everywhere else?

Most regular units especially in the North believe in Tradition and like to keep it that way. Just like baiting is still legal and big money. Also more deer numbers in most CWD units
and anyway the can bring the numbers down they will including possible sharp shooters this summer without the owners permission also. I have not seen a update on this but I will send off a email do my DNR buddy. Just a side note where I hunt (Gun) up in Unit 43 Langlade county this coming season you can not kill a doe period gun or bow due to low numbers. Last year it was only during gun season you couldn't.

    Damn, beat me to it.

I have thought though that they may think that it gets more guys in the woods. If I have land, and I do not gun hunt I might let others gun hunt it. If they allow bows during gun season, then I would not let them I would be in the tree, then where would the gun hunter go? Maybe they figure it that way, maybe not. When I do get land I will not gun hunt and unless I like someone real well there will be no gun hunting there. Not that there is any thing wrong with it, I just don't do it a lot.

    bows in gun season

I live in maryland to, They allow boe durring the gun seasons if you wear hunter orange,.Think of it this way you shoot at a deer with your bow, Deer runs ,maybe a 100 or more yrds. He would have so many holes in him from the other gun hunters , then the fight would insue on who killed him first.Worse if you didn't wear hunter orange and you tracked your wounded deer , they would shoot you. Some guys don't learn and are unsafe , they shoot at movement.

The answer most likely is that the DNR thinks people will kill a deer with a rifle and use their bow tag on it.

So why can't us gun hunters hunt during the bow season, too? Guess those bowhunters *****ed about it until they got their way. :D
