Standing corn in Dec in North Dakota was crucial to our hunts. But I can also see how it can be a p.i.a. if your restricted to/on small properties and the deer arent coming out of it till after dark.
Was not... the " guide" was the crucial part to our hunts. Keep in mind the guide got permission so we could hunt the corn !! LOL Standing corn is great and hope it is still standing until the end of season !! Then they can cut it so shed hunting is easier. Tim
Once they enter they are never to be seen again. They are abducted by the corn gods who perform all kinds of whitetail experiments on them until the corn is cut.
for me it's just the increased amount of cover. Last year just the neighbors corn was in late and I've never seen so many deer...but this year it's every single corn field within 20 miles (none touched as of Wed)...that's way too much cover. We're still seeing fair share of deer - I just like the %'s better when it's all out.
I really look forward to when the rotation is for corn. Beans are great around here, for preseason scouting, but more or less useless once hunting season rolls around. We all talk about unintruded sanctuaries on our properties, what better than standing corn. If you are on a good relationship with the land owner a "heads-up" call when the combine fires up, adds to a very exciting part of the year. There are other areas of cover on the property thats true, but only leg-work will locate those. Get the combines moving and prepare for an all day sit! Those first few days after the corn is cut are also an exceptional time to be on the travel route. Deer can't resist the easy pickins and where the doe go, the bucks are in tow. There are many ways to use the corn to your advantage..use it wisely and make it your friend!
Scotto, I definantly see a difference in my areas when the corn is in late. My numbers go way down until they pick and then climb back up.
I killed my 155" on the edge of standing corn Tuesday afternoon. Before that I hated it, but in the end I was able to use it to my advantage. Without the standing corn I probably don't kill that deer. I'm hunting again this morning on the edge of a different field bordering a thicket. I have had 5 bucks come through so far, and it's still early.
