John Petrie’s Collection of Thomas Jefferson Quotes

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” (Quoting Cesare Beccaria)

We all have had or have different experiences. Why I take a strong stance on firearm ownership is I've been robbed at gun point when I was 17 walking in on my family home being burglarized. I've been shot once in the back of my right shoulder for refusing to give a person a ride, stabbed trying to beak up a fight between two women, and beaten up on Alameda Naval Base (closed- where they record MythBusters) for not wanting to join other sailors in a drinking binge. I've lost a sister to a violent crime and a nephew just four years ago in an armed robbery. He had just turned 19yrs old 2 days prior to his death.

I've been even told that the reason I've strong on self defense that I'm seeking revenge. That very person was killed in Jacksonville Florida driving home from work and his murder has remained unsolved 1995. My honest opinion is your personal safety is your responsibility and the police can't be there for when you need them. So you better be prepared to defend yourself if it need be.

Want to share any experiences or thoughts?

You should move. Sounds like a crime ridden cesspool down there.

I have a permit to carry but never do. I have never felt the need. I only got the permit so I could carry a handgun during trapping season.

I did I moved to Virginia in 2003. You wouldn't believe this, but i had a run in with the Virginia Tech Shooter Seung-Hui Cho at the open gun range where we nearly got into a fight. The way the range is set up if you stand to the right of the table your shell casings will normally fall on the table beside you.

He stood on the left closer to me and refused to move. Once the some hot brass ejected from his gun went down my shirt I was jumping around trying to get it out. He just stood there and smiled.

Since people are so friendly up there they looked at me like I was starting trouble. So I packed my stuff up to leave. He and his friends left a little before me. thinking they may cause some trouble and yes he had friends don't believe everything you see in the news about him.

We drove down 460 back toward Virginia Tech. There's a traffic light off the highway to go back onto Tech Campus and they took that left. Immediately call Tech Campus Police and reported to them that kids were coming on the campus with guns.

the Campus Police response was...You're being Paranoid and our students are far superior and they don't cause trouble. That was in September of 2006 the shooting took place in April 2007.

My wife sometimes call me cursed for trouble. Sometimes when I'm alone I think about it and wonder.

Pretty amazing how many times you have been involved in gun-play and other violent crime situations. Just amazing....almost unheard of.

Nearly 1 in 5 women in the USA has been raped or nearly raped. 1 in 4 women has been beaten by a intimate partner. 1 in 6 has been stalked.

In Illinois women cannot even attempt to level the playing field by carrying concealed. Instead the State Police recommend making yourself vomit to hope to avoid being raped.. or at best.. carrying a nail file. They recommend against carrying or even owning a gun.

The stats of male rape are just as bad for men. The average male entering the prison system between the ages of 16 and 40 years of age is raped within 6 months. On average a man is being raped every 90 minutes in the United States. And every 45 minutes of the day of a year a man, woman, and child will walk out of their front door and never been seen again.

When I tried to break up the two women fighting I was stabbed just underneath my right eye with a finger nail file. and the person that killed my sister, I nearly came close to shooting him two years before. They dated and in a jealous rage he tried to fight her while I was home on leave. I broke it up, he later tried to sneak up on me with a Ruger Super Black Hawk .44. I made him drop the gun by seeing his shadow and drawing my gun and making him drop his. They broke up after that incident.

2 years later Edward Mangum killed her and never spent a ****ing day in jail lack of evidence... There's not a day goes by that I'll keep that thought.....
