Shift work in May is killing me. Might get the boat out again for a day or 2 in the middle of the month, other than that it'll be this summer and into fall until bow season opens back up!
Another great day from the kayak. Caught 30+ large mouths this morning. Most were around the 14 inch mark with 3 over 17 and one 19.
I'm headed out after crappie tomorrow....but I'll have a bass pole with me in case I get into some.....I can't wait!
There's some smallmouth in the lake I fish at, but the largemouth out number them by a lot. Been fishing there 10 years and haven't caught one. I don't have a boat so it's hard to go to the areas they're in. If cast far enough there's a rock pile they're on but not exactly sure where it is.
So you bass guys, what are you using as your go to tactics/confidence lures. My #1 confidence lure has always been a senko. I generally use a Yum Dinger while just fishing, but when I did tournaments I would use the original Yamamoto. Every tournament I cashed a check in other than 2 came in on bags caught on senkos. I used to LOVE flipping big craws and creatures, but have moven towards a lot more finesse fishing with the pressure on our lakes. At times it's tough to beat a small square bill also. One lure quickly moving up my list is a suspending jerkbait. I spent a week on the Ozarks last spring, and got on a hot jerkbait bite one day, really tried expanding on it after that. Planned on fishing the Big Bass Bash a few weeks ago, but ended up having to bail out on it. 7 pounder won a lucky guy about $70,000.
It really depends for me. I tend to not have a go-to tactic, I've got confidence in a lot of things depending on the situation. I'm just as confident jig fishing shallow structure as I am dropshotting fish in 40ft of water. I personally enjoy jig fishing the most though whether it's deep or shallow. All of my truly big fish came on jigs. I've also caught a lot of fish on Senko's over the years but really try to not rely on them. They certainly work in most shallow situations, but for some reason I feel like I'm not learning if I'm just throwing Senko's. I've definitely had tournaments though where the fishing was tough and I had to break out the Senko rod to put together a respectable bag. On a side note, I was supposed to be headed up to Geneva tomorrow, but I brought the boat in for some updates on the trailer last weekend. They are still waiting on new carpet that was ordered for the wheel well liners and bunks and my boat is on stands in their yard until sometime early next week. No fishing for me this weekend unfortunately.
Pretty much any soft plastic Texas or carolina rigged but senkos are my favorite. Jigs are Second as they are incredibly versatile and can work at all times. 3) frogs 4)crank baits 5) spinner baits Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I definitely understand what you mean. When I get out by myself I try to learn new tactics. The guy I generally fish with throws a senko 95% of the time, so at times it is hard to watch him reeling them in as I attempt to learn something else, and I usually end up grabbing my senko rod..

Took my son out on the kayak this evening. We caught 20+ bass in a little over an hour. This was his biggest of the day. I sure am glad he loves to fish!
Fly fished a little yesterday. The local streams are stocked and never stay cold enough to maintain natives, so as with any stream, suckers are everywhere. The particular stream I fished was muddy which made for a miserable time on the water - sliding around and getting everything muddy. I did catch a few small fish less than 9" long. The bow I caught had terrible color which is disappointing. I'm officially done messing with those types of areas and hopefully get to fish some cold streams soon. It's also time for spawning bass and some floats down the potomac.
I went crappie fishing this weekend. Had a rough time Saturday...only caught 5 bluegill. Sunday afternoon I tried a different lake and did much better. 22 crappie& 10 big bluegill. All the crappie were males prepping the beds. I'll be back to that spot in a week to see if the big females have moved in
I'd like to get some tips for crappie fishing. Bait, what kind of structure, and anything else you feel has helped you.
Ice but the reason I mention it is I still have success with the same setup jiggin over sunken trees or beds. I use a spinning reel with a light weight crank for open water crappie.
