I spent two years in HS attending an auto mechanics vocational school. I'm one of those guys that's a motor head with a passion for old classic muscle cars. I'm not a guru but I'm capable of restoring old cars if they are worthy of it. As such, I have a list of cars I've always wanted to collect. The top two are Mustangs, 1967 fastback and a Mach 1...either a first or second gen. Would prefer the 429 (7L) cobra jet engine of the first gen but I've always figured I'd take about any of them. Second to the 429 is the 351 Cleveland with a 4 barrel carb...3rd is the 351Cl with a 2bbl carb. Well, I found one this evening. It's a 1973 Mach I all original right down to the wheels. It needs a full restoration but it's only $4K. It's got the 351 Cleveland in it with the 2bbl carb. The chances of ever finding a 429 car that's remotely in a price range I can afford is slim and none so I'd be tickled with either version of the 351. I'm going to try to go look at it tomorrow. I already know it has a salvage title and the floor pans need replaced. I hate to let go of the cash but it's one of those things that is so rare I may never get another chance at another one priced that low. Not like I don't already have enough junk projects around either...I really need to think this deal over this evening. Some of my other bucket list cars are: 1a. 1950's 3100 deluxe cab pickup ***acquired*** 1953 3100 first vehicle 1. 67 Mustang fastback 2. 69-73 Mustang Mach I 3. 67-73 Dodge Charger 4. Bandit Trans Am (1977) 5. 67-69 (GenI) Camaro 6 70-81 (GenII) Camaro ***acquired*** 1977 Z-28 (2) rare 7. 1957 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coup ..... .....
From pics I've seen it's cleaner than my rustmaro. I've not bought it yet, may not. Almost convinced myself overnight not to take another project I don't have time for. I've got a management burn to do today on one of the farms, maybe someone will buy it before I get a chance to go look at it.
Pretty sure I've made up my mind to pass on that car unfortunately. Kind of a bummer, I was pretty excited about it last night. Just not exactly what I want given I'm too short on time and getting into cattle as well. I'd really prefer a 1969-70 Mach I Q-code. Darn shame, it's cool car.
I would still like to find a 1963 Rambler 4 door, I had one in high school I bought for $100. I get the cars that make you want them.
Help an old man out. The 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland. Wasn’t the Cleveland a modified big block ? If not, which Ford engine is the “modified” big block ? I’m a Chevy guy mainly and forgot a lot about these things. Sometimes temporary too and then I remember. Lol 59 pushing 60 isn’t easy . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not 100% sure, it always seemed like a convoluted mess to me. The modified came after the 351C and is in between the 351W and the 400 and is a 351M. I guess Ford wanted something to take the place of the Cleveland after it stopped after 1974.
numbers-matching 67 SS Chevelle w/ a 396 is my absolute dream car. Had a clone when I was younger but it was my first restoration attempt and there was still a lot wrong with it. I've been tempted by a couple of other well-done clone jobs since but haven't regretted passing on them. I doubt you will regret passing on the 73. https://www.smokymountaintraders.com/cars-for-sale/201/1967-chevrolet-chevelle-ss-396 just because they're so darn sexy... close 2nd is a 63 split window 'Vette followed by a real Bullit Mustang.
Nice choices guys, I agree, those are also on my list, just further down on it. If I had every car on my wish list I'd have to have a building the size of at least one city block. Here's a couple more on my list. Gen 1 firebird,Gen 2 firebird, Gen 3 firebird 67 Impala I'd have taken this 73 Mach 1, it was fine...I just got to thinking how far that $4K would go buying calves or seeding pasture and couldn't justify spending it on a rusty old car. The car restored would be worth $20-30K but I'd be heartbroken to sell it so I'd never get that $4K investment back plus who knows how long it would take me to get it restored to something safe to drive. At $4K I could flip it and make money but once I owned it I'd not want to part with it and I can make money without feeling bad about it, lol. I'd like to have one I didn't have to replace the floor and trunk pans in as well, that's a freaking job. I like the body style better on the 69-70 mustang fastbacks, if I have to settle for a less desirable drive train, I'd prefer to have the body style I like better. That back glass on that series of fastbacks sometimes when I look at them I think...wow, really...not sure I'd have gone that direction as a designer. Then other times I look at them and still love them. Here's the car for sale:
I bought a car that I really liked last year. I really wanted a 1969 Camaro but they were going for 8-10K more than what some other cars were going for. I got a good bang for my buck with a 1969 Chevelle. It may have even started out as a real ss 396 car as it has all the badges, stripes and emblems of one. However, it is not numbers matching which I didn't want. It is a pro street car with a bored 454 and a narrowed Ford 9 inch rear end. I have freshened the engine, trans and rear end and am adding front upper and lower tubular control arms and double adjustable coil over shocks all the way around. I will be taking it to the drag strip this year. So far this car has been a blast to drive. Very fast. You only live once and at age 61 I decided to give it one more go around.
I'm not very good with pics. I just copied them from a post I did last summer and they showed up for me. I'll see what I can do. Here is the link. https://forums.bowhunting.com/threads/got-myself-a-new-car.89437/
