That sounds like a great time. I'm thinking the Lineman's Rodeo is going to keep me occupied.

I have actually been thinking of this myself. They rut mid oct normally. I hate to cut into my deer season but really think I am going to try a few days. Let me know when you decide dates. I might join you.

Definitely go with an outfitter! The Blackwater Refuge can be a scary place if you aren't familiar with it. But those little buggers love it down there. I'd be interested in joining as well. I see and hear them while duck hunting all the time over there. One of the guys on my lease in Caroline County just shot one with his bow last year. Only a few documented that far north.

So... am I reading this right??? The 130$ NR hunting license + 25$ archery stamp allows you 1 antlered deer? No actual tag needed? Then for another 25$ antlered deer stamp you can take another but first must kill two non-antlered deer first?

I will check on NR regs. For a resident we buy our license along with a bow stamp and muzzle loader stamp. No tags are required, we just print out generic field tags. With license purchase you may take 1 antlered deer per season(archery, ML, firearm) you can also purchase a bonus antlered stamp. To use the bonus stamp you must take two antler less deer prior to using the bonus tag. It does not matter what order or weapon type used to take the two antler less deer. For example this year I took a doe(archery) then a buck(archery) then another doe(archery) and now my bonus stamp is available for me to use.

TJ, I just looked at the book again. For a NR, total cost for license and archery stamp is $155. That includes 3 tags for Sika only one of which may be antlered. The bonus buck tag may not be used for Sika, only whitetail. You would also be able hunt whitetail with that license if you chose to stick around after the Sika hunt.

Correct. With that license you could shoot one antlered buck either whitetail or sika and unlimited whitetail doe or two sika cows. If you bought the bonus stamp you could stick around and shoot two whitetail doe and earn a whitetail buck as your bonus. It is all available online and we don't have "tags" that you see other states wrapping around the animal and cutting notches out of.

Here's a link to Doug Wigfield's page. It has some good info on Sikas, I turkey hunted with him last spring and he is very knowledgeable about them. Anyone who's interested in this trip should check it out and consider purchasing one of the calls he makes.

Doug is a great guy. He helped me out tremendously when I first started turkey hunting.

Ruger, I can't afford to go with you to Muddy Marsh but I'd love to hook up and go on public land. I only got to go two days this past season with no luck. Heard lots of bugling though, it is super addictive!

Just typed this out in a pm. Copied it here to save time.

Where you at with that hunt, bro?
Nowhere actually. I had been emailing the outfitter back and forth since November. He told me to call the last week of Jan to book, when I did he said all of September and October were booked solid and he only had a few dates left in December. I got a little upset with him and he explained that booking for NEW customers started then but returning customers get the first shot at the same dates they hunted that year. Apparently they have about a 90% return rate. Good for them I guess although I wasn't too happy about it.

So instead my buddy and I are going to spend some time this spring/summer kayaking and hiking the marshes at Blackwater and fishing bay. Then do a public land sika hunt in October. So if anybody is interested in going down to swat mosquitos with us in October let me know.

Repeat customers do get first priority at most concessions. Sure does sound like a great hunt. I didn't know that you had Sikas there. Definitely have to put them on my to do list!

    Hi All
I would be interested in the DIY hunt I am over in Virginia. What dates are you looking at and what are you thinking for lodging
