I drove down to pick up the meat from the smokehouse and on my way home I started getting shaky from low blood sugar. I drove to the McDonald's in the next town and went through the drive through. Ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and a bottle of water. Had to wait a long time as the line was going extremely slow. When I finally got to the window, the cashier told me that the lady in the car ahead of me said "Happy Thanksgiving" and paid for my meal. So, I decided to pay it forward for the guy behind me and asked how much for his meal. The cashier laughed and I said "What? Did he order enough for the Hawkeyes?" She said "no, this has been going on like this all day!" I paid for his meal and while I was getting mine at the next window, I saw him pay for the meal after his. The woman that paid for mine was waiting for the rest of her meal so I pulled up next to her and then thanked her for her generosity, and then left. I jumped on the highway headed home. About 10 miles down the road, I heard a vehicle honking and looked next to me to see a truck. The driver held up a McDonald's cup and then smiled and waved. It must have been the one I paid for. I gave him a smile and a salute back. After that, he slowed down, did a U-Turn in the median and headed back the way he had came. This guy had gone clear out of his way to make sure that he could say thank you, which I think was very nice of him. Just goes to show that there are still some pretty cool people in America that do nice things for each other!
I read your note during my sermon this morning... great story! I made the point that we look most like Christ when we behave like you described.
I was impressed with the woman ahead of me who bought my meal and the man behind me. I don't think I would have driven 10 or so miles out of my way to thank someone in person like that.
