After my 11th year of hunting, I have finally decided to start getting very serious about whitetail hunting. Even though I am 19 years old, I feel as though I have gained a whole lot of experience through my years. I am just now starting the get into the filming aspect of everything but I have been practicing proper Quality Deer Management for some years now. This past year after a long 102 hours in the stand with a bow, I shot my biggest buck to date on opening day of shotgun season. After scoring 158 3/8, I immediately started thinking about next season. I have had goals of filming hunts with a partner or group of hunters for a long time. So I am asking questions about what my next step would be? What cameras do I buy, who do I try to get in touch with, and ultimately what is my plan for hunting next year? I need some help with what to do.
welcome aboard Jason! one step at a time. pick one thing and get it done then move to the next. don't overwhelm yourself. lots of good people on here that will be good help.
If you are serious about videoing your hunts, I would strongly encourage you to check out campbellcameras.com, not only to look at their equipment but also their outdoor packages. I think they offer a class for video taping hunts (or at least they used to). Good luck; we all like watching good hunting videos.
Filming hunts can be as complex or simply as you want it to be. There are a lot of good options out there for you to film your hunts and I definitely agree with TC Racing as to doing stuff in simple steps. Budget is a big thing when you first start filming and there are a lot of options available on the market. If you want something bad enough main this is to stay focused on the tasks at hand year round.
There are thousands of guys and gals doing it. You could spend the entire winter watching hunting and how-to clips on Youtube and various other web based shows. In my opinion, if you are doing it for yourself, more power to you and enjoy. If you are thinking about doing it commercially, I think that ship sailed a long time ago.
The Hunting Public. Really like the stuff they put out this year. I should film myself....you guys would punch yourself for me as much I miss opportunities killing big bucks that slip by me for whatever reason. I would never make it in the film industry......big buck, no shot. Big buck, miss low. Big buck, miss high. Next season...not a single big deer seen. LOL
I think the best thing you can do is get a partner, or a small group of dedicated people to be on your team. Working together in the off-season and filming each other does two things: 1) It builds a sense of camaraderie and allows you to share the experiences with like-minded people 2) The film results are way better when two people are in the tree. Also, you can split the costs of the camera equipment.
YUP! I do all I do merely out of sheer love of it, my advice to the OP or anyone else start documenting everything if you enjoy telling the story of your journey or you simply enjoy sharing thoughts and such with others. The $ train chances sailed a long time ago, unless you're well connected or already an established group (The Hunting Public comes to mind as a SOLID amazing group sliding away from Midwest Whitetail...they have recognized faces and sponsors). If you expect to make a second wage doing this, be ready to spend WAY too much time, energy and money up front to accomplish that....but more power to you if you wanna do that I guess.
