I had to drive (read: ride) 5 hours to a site today. The guy that was driving listened to country the entire drive. I heard this atrocity at least 10 times during the drive.

    What the hell is this?

Some people like country, some don't. Some like specific genre's of country over other's (old school vs. contemporary which admittedly does borderline on pop sometimes). It would be a pretty boring world if we all liked the same thing (imagine if everyone on here became a Matthews fanboy:D).

We can delve into another thread of " 'They don't make/do Insert reminiscent subject here like they used to' ," but they're selling albums, and the music popularity is growing because there is a demand. Like it or not.

I'm not a Keith Urban fan, but man can he play the guitar. Wish the same could be said for most "old school" country artists, or many contemporary artists regardless of genre for that matter. I could bash most country musicians for being below basic musicians in terms of their respective instrumental skills (I just started back playing my guitar more, and wow, are almost all country songs the same 4 chords), but then again, it's what sells.

It's all new pop country music there is no george jones music anymore. urban is one of the best guitar players out there i must say. But the old country music i grew up with is long gone.

it is NOT country .... period ... pop country ...that kills me ..... it is pop music .. thats all ... it was named decades ago ... I am just trying to figure out how it got thrown in the country music genre .....

Matt ... I don't have a problem with someone liking Urban .... just call him what he is ... a darker Michael Jackson ;) ... also, who cares about how many chords the old timers used .. it was great music (music encompassing the singer and instruments)

That was my point. I DON'T criticize the artists for their instrumental skill. I enjoy the music for what it is, just like the millions that listen to "pop country" do as well.

I suppose I should ask the old school country fans what about the older artists appeals to them so much? Do you relate to the vocals more? Is it the sound more twang)? Just the idea that the music was made in a "better" time period? What is it?

For the record, I see your point about music crossovers.

My thoughts on country music have been expressed here before. I admittedly don't know a lot about it. I generally don't have any interest in things that are terrible. With that said, I do have some respect for this Taylor Swift. At least she writes her own songs and plays an instrument. She also had the balls to turn down a major record deal to go with a nobody because she would be allowed to write her own music.

Yeah, I saw 10 minutes of a documentary. As for Keith Urban, if he annoys "real" country music fans, then he is okay by me. Never heard a song by him before though.

And punching babies? Thats not very christian-like.

Do you have the idea that Christians are Christ like all the time? And for the sake of the newbies on here ... I was just playin ... but YOU knew that ... some may not have known your response was tongue in cheek ... so I will clarify for their sake ;)

I hate pop music, but that is not my issue ... my issue is that he is put in the Country music genre .... that is my only issue ... if you like him, enjoy ... just call him what he is ... a pop star .. not a country star .... I was bored .... what can I tell ya :D

Admittedly I'm not a Keith Urban fan at all. In fact, I'll change the station when he comes on. Not to say he's not a talented singer and guitar player, because he is, but the tone of his music and his lyrics are just not my thing. IMO he writes music that, generally, appeals to the female audience. Lots of love songs and happy-go-lucky sappy stuff. Again, not my thing.

As for Taylor, while she's not my thing either, I have nothing but repsect for her. She's one of very few country artists who actually writes her own songs and music. Some of the biggest names in country history, both now and then, couldn't write a good song to save their life. The entire industry was built by taking good looking, charasmatic figures who could sing and paying people to write songs and music for them. Eerily similar to the very same "Pop" music that the good PT hates. I, myself, find it ironic.

Today's country music sure is different than it was in the past, but then again what isn't? From the clothes we wear and the cars we drive to the music and movies we watch just about everything in this world has changed and will continue to do so.

An PT - betcha don't like crossbows in bow season either. :poke:

Hey Mister...you better watch what you say about Taylor. She might write a song about you.

I actually enjoy some of her music. Its the only thing I can tolerate when I ride in my wife's car.

I'm fairly certain that my girlfriend would rather "bumb uglies" with Keith Urban, than myself.

We saw him last month too, in a little convention center. I personally was too inebriated to recall the entire thing, but he was 100x better than I would have expected.

Yeah, he's kinda a dbag. But I'm sure other people think I'm a dbag too!

Lol ... not much, apparently :D ... listen y'all, all I was asking is why they are called country music when obviously they are not. I said nothing about their talent or mass appeal ... nothing as to why anyone would like them or that you are a freak if you do .... and Justin, you are right! Bowguns (crossbows) should not be in archery season sans for the disabled ... and I ain't talking mentally (sorry Keith Urban fans) :busted:

I don't know PT, I'm going to keep my eye out for a story in NY that involves random babies getting punched. Just remember, its Keith's fault, not the babies'.

And guess what...I have no issues with crossbows in archery season. Bet thats a shocker, huh?
