I've been a pretty busy bee. I have burned, cleared, mowed, tilled, cultipacked, planted, and cultipacked a 3/4 acre plot on my place and also tilled and cultipacked about 2.5 acres on a friends farm that's just down the road from me. I still have lots on the to do list, including prepping and planting my Egyptian wheat screens, 3.5 acres of soybeans, and later this summer some turnips. My new plot is spit in half with the lower lying, water holding areas having Whitetail Institutes Trophy Clover and the hill side has Whitetail Institute Extreme. I'm hoping for a good plot that last for several years with only minimal maintenance necessary.
Clover plots were frost seeded in February. Next week the plan is to plant last years brassica plots with oats and buckwheat. Also, I will be planting a couple plot screens around the boarder of the plots that are open hoping that it will help when entering a stand to hunt along with helping add more daytime use to the plots. Clover will get mowed soon along with a dose of fertilizer. Spraying future fall plots are in the near future also. Gotta love this time of year when bone is growing, fawns are dropping and dirt is being turned!!
I would probably have the majority of my food plots done, but there is one small problem. The main property that I hunt is about 7-8 feet underwater. It will be July-August before I will be able to get anything in there, if I am able to even then.
I had some left over PlotSpike seed so I cleared out an area in the woods near a frequently use deer trail on the top of a ridge and put it out. I have a field camera further down the trail about 20 yards from it but the little plot came in great. I will be pulling the memory card from the camera within the next week or so, if there's anything left of the plot worth taking a picture of I'll post it.
