I was shooting tonight and found for some reason I shoot much better at a deer target than at dots on a target. Anybody else this way too?
Yea, I think I try to get too exact when shooting at dots. Deer target is just getting it in the kill zone Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm opposite. My groups and accuracy is good all the way out to 80 yards with a exact dot on the target. However my 40 yard group on a deer target is all over the vitals Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Are you really shooting better or you just think you are shooting better? You have a definite point of aim on a target vs a 3d deer so how do you know how really accurate you are shooting on the deer?
Consistency wise I am shooting better my arrows group together better for some reason on a animal target with the dots they are to me at least not that consistent but I think what it is is when I shot at a dot I think to much about my shot and how it isn't in the bulls eye where on the deer target if I put it right behind the shoulder in the kill zone its a good shot. Does that make sense?
I also think when shooting at the dot I compensate to much on my second and third shot to try and get it in the center which is another reason they don't group together.
I noticed the exact same thing myslef last week. I tend to get target panic and flinch when shooting at dots. I switch to the deer target and can hit the heart every time.
I think for a lot of people it is easier to trust the "float" of the pin on a 3d target when you are aiming for a general area of the vitals. Where as on a single spot on a bag target or paper target people have a tendency to try and hold exactly on a specific spot and end up making a bad shot.
I agree with this 100% if you are a inch or so off when shooting the deer target it is still mentally convincing it is a good shot where as if you miss the dot but an inch or two it plays a lot more on the mind.
