The season is fast approaching for the hunting season most difficult of all. I'm talking about a prey that is well camouflaged and doesn't scare at all. You can even step on them and they don't move. Yes, I'm talking about the wiley Morel. Are any of you looking forward to this season as much as I am? Last year, we almost got skunked because of the weather conditions and only brought home about 4 lbs of them. This year the conditions are looking a lot more conducive to producing a huge crop. We've been told by quite a few people here that this property usually produces about 100 lbs of these delacacies.
I've never had a Morel. Been told they are good. Basically, I hate mushrooms. Hence why I haven't really tried any of the mushroom delicacies. My grandma use to have a certain giant oak tree she would find a MASSIVE sheepshead mushrooms. She loved looking for those.....don't know if she found any Morel hotspots though. I should ask her.
I have never been a fan of any mushroom other than Morels. The taste is like no other. Give them one try and I think you'll be hooked!
When I originally opened this thread, I was hoping it was going to be about one man's quest to find a 25 year old virgin. I guess a thread about mushrooms will have to suffice...
Aw man...... batter 'em up and deep fry 'em....sprinkle of Tony Chaterie's Cajun on 'em right when they come out.....Fry up some crappie, pop open a brew and call it a night!
Morels are as good as it gets! I make a meal out of them! I'll soak em in a brine for about 15/20 minutes then right into the frying pan! I used to use garlic salt but learned that it hides the flavor of the mushroom. I now just fry em up in butter! This thread is killin me......
What is soooo hard about it??? Here are a few pics from last year. Mom and dad even came out to help find a few.
Jm, go colorblind and try it. That's a nice little batch. Usually, the wife and I find about 40 lbs a year, but last year we were way short.
I went out a bunch of times last year and only found a couple of mushrooms that the guy I was 'shrooming with called 'pecker heads'. If any part of your anatomy should resemble those mushrooms, you should seek medical attention immediately. I guess I was out there too early.
Christine, you need to start saving all of your posts and put them in a book. It would be a best seller for sure. And we are still waiting for you to come shoot the left handed bows at the booth.
What is the "season" for these. I used to find them all the time around our house. Never did eat them. One of the guys that we used to hunt with brought some puffballs back when he went out one day. Fried em up with some butter, and they were awesome.
Usually around turkey season here. When the weather gets good and warm and they like wet weather too.
Central Iowa it's usually around Mother's Day. The further north you go, the later they pop. Depending on how far north you are, I'd start looking around the week after Mother's Day.
