I just picked up a paint colt last night. It will be a family project raising the little guy. We adopted him when his owner could no longer afford to care for him. He is only about 8 months old. we will have to geld him before he gets too much older, we're just waiting for him to put on a few pounds. He is a bit malnourished, and he needs to be wormed.
My 5 yo daughter has been taking riding lessons and participating in play days on a friends horse and has really wanted one. Now we have to get one she can ride now and one for momma to ride as well. (I'll stick with motorized transport!)

I'll post a few pics tomorrow.

Our family used to own 3 horses several years, ok like 15 years ago. I decided to enlist into the military and Daddy sold them to a good home. I miss having horses. Although I don't miss all the fly's on a hot summer day.

Enjoy the new colt sounds exciting. Yeppers post some pictures.

My in-laws have had horses all their lives. My father in law needs to sell a couple of them because it is too much work for him anymore, with feeding them and him being out of shape. My nieces usually go out and ride them once in awhile, so they get some attention one way or another. He has 5 horses, use to have 8 or 9. One paint we named spirit 3 years ago was born at his place.

Funny you mention the name Spirit. When we asked Lily what she wanted to name it she said, "Steve", no, wait, "Spirit". No, Blue because it has a blue eye, (walleyed). She has no idea.

I grew up around horses and rode almost daily from the time I was maybe 7 or so till I was probably 15. I've only been on them a handful of times since. My step mom and father still run a horse boarding/training/breeding business to this day and have 15+ horses on their farm.

Grew up with them since I was about 5. My sister got into them around 8 yrs of age, and it grew into pretty much her life. I only rode a handful of times, but she's won countless riding and driving competitions at local, state, and national levels. She now has a farm nearby with 5 horses. I'm not a huge fan, but good luck!

He don't look nearly as bad as I was expecting. He's fine!

Good for you and Lily. Like someone else mentioned, watch him biting. They can lay a hurtin' on you. I knew a guy who lost a lot of his lip to a horse bite.

We had as many as 9, growing up (my granparents). I rode 'em when I was there (every weekend). But, I never knew much about 'em. I made every mistake, riding, that a boy could make. Luckily I never got hurt.

He's cute. Good luck to you.

Got rid of mine several years ago. I have been on horses most of my life but with family and a job the horses weren't getting the attention they needed so I sold them.

The little guy is a little thin but he is good looking

I grew up on horses too, I dont have any myself, but my mother always has a horse. I get the fun duty of putting up 5 ton of hay for mom each summer. :)

Yeah, you'll need to feed him a bit before he's ready to eat. Heh... heh. ;)

Seriously, tho', he's got nice colors. Good luck with him!

My biological father worked on a farm and he taught me how to ride when I was very little. He'd let me ride one of the older mares without any supervision. (He either trusted me or was trying to off me. Hard to tell.) I could get a bridle on the horse but the saddles were way bigger than me so no saddles.... I'd lead the horse over to the fence.... climb up the fence and hop on the horse.

Galloping around, just me and the horse, was a taste of autonomy that I've never forgotten.

I used to dream of getting a horse. Still think about it from time to time. However, I think Kendall would shoot me and the horse if he came home and found one on the property. He hates horses.

I've always liked horses. Had 3 of them growing up, an Arabian and 2 quarter horses. As far as the biting. Shetlands are the worst for that. Paints are pretty easy going horses and I wouldn't worry much about It. Horses are good for kids, It gives them a responsibility If your up for them helping with taking care of It.

Lily taking care of it is what its all about. we make her feed it every day and put it on a lead and walk it. FFA is pretty big in our local schools and we want Lily to be involved in that. She has shown a great interest in animals and caring for them. I think we're off to a good start.

Lily's cousin Savannah,(11yo), just got $2400 for a show pig. 1st place Hamp. Lily thought Savannah parading around the ring with a pig was pretty glamorous! Go figure LOL!
