I know zilch about doing such. I can get the domain I want. And, GoDaddy offers a "build along".

Is this something almost anyone could do?

Will it look worth a crap?

    Get what you pay for?

    Anyone done this....or something similar?

    Ever day

Question to ask Jeff and what to do

1.Do you want a standard Brochure site
    2.Do you want Content Managment?
    3.SEO work?
4.Is this going to have web application pieces? Like a scheduler for jobs, calender etc.

We charge 130.00 an hour for designer work and 150.00 for web application work. A basic HTML Brochure site would be the cheapest option.

    How many pages?

It'll be a business site. I "think" the package they offer is 5 pages (don't know, though).

It's strictly informational. It says It'll be able to host email, though. Cool, but not SO important.

They have a lot of designs and a place for me to add in my own artwork. I can make a helluva slide on a powerpoint presentation....lol. Isn't this a glorified, similar process? Again, I don't have a clue.

It depends, do you want flash?

If you want just straight HTML Brochure site, you can make a site pretty easy. How it looks, well who knows.

I don't even know what the diff. between flash and html is. Nor do I know what the advantages or disadvantages of either are.

I'm looking for people to be able to:

    Learn about my co.
    Contact the co.

    What else is there?

I hate content management systems. Website Tonight, or whatever they call it, is terrible. Very limited.

IMO, if you have no idea where to start or what you're looking to do, I would have someone develop the site for you. I can't tell you how many calls I get from people that tried to make a website themselves using a content management system. In their own words, they "wasted their time", with not much to show for it.

Web design prices are all over the place. If you put some time into it, you can find someone to make a decent site for a fair price. A fair amount of shady ones to sift through though.

    Again, just my opinion.

Flash is used to spice up a site, I call it eye candy. Catches the eye of the browser. Besides that it's worlthless, but looks cool.

For your basic HTML borchure site, 5 pages around 1000-1500 bucks. It depends if you have all the content, must companies do not have content ready and it takes forever to drag it out of them.

To have people find you the site will need some basic SEO work done. Google is a good place to start. Google gets 60% of the searches and has some free tools that can help you. Analytics and webmaster tool. To help sites find you a couple things need to be done. You need to create a robot.txt and sitemap.xml and load xml to all the search engines(yahoo, bing etc). Have a plan for what keywords you are going to use. The average search today is 2.9 words long, so what are the best three words describe your company. Keywords should make up around 20% of your content. I would suggest you add a news or blog page that you update at least weekly.

For SEO content is king, the more content you have the better your search results. There are also rules you need to follow so you do not get black listed.

No it doesn't. But lets say it did...you know what you're looking for when using a content management system. It is difficult for someone to make a decent site if they have no, or little, knowledge of a CMS.

You give people too much credit. I can't tell you how many calls I get on a weekly basis from people that tried a CMS, and failed. Some are certainly better than others. Drupal and Joomla aren't terrible, if you know what you're looking for.

I used homestead (now intuit) for the website I built for the construction company. I know very little about web design but I took one of their templates and modified it. I pay a total $19.99 a month for it.
