I've used the RZR or ATV to transport 5 deer this season. 3 of those would have taken several hours of dragging uphill to get to the truck. I won't go to my mountain lease without a ATV/UTV in tow.

Another follow-up to this thread (and the 'How far do you walk') might be.....

What do you have to show for your efforts? Do you think this affects your success?

Only for hauling out Deer. I dont like the noise and the smell it leaves on the cloths!

We have a John Deere Gator that is left in the shed at our small property - used just for retrieval, and it's the best investment we have made out there (bought used for $1500). I would not approach stands in the morning on an ATV due to smell (and maybe noise)...but I will say I'm confident ATV's (and our Gator) do not impact deer in the least if just "putting" through the woods. I have seen many a deer remain bedded if we don't stop - where as if we would have been walking, these deer would have hightailed in no time.

So back to your question - I get by without one many times if not hunting our property (especially on public ground that doesn't allow)...but it does give you the confidence and ability to get back there a little farther if you know you're not dragging:)

I had one a number of years ago.SOld it with less than 200 miles on it.We are not allowed to take them on State land and I didn't have enough private land tracts that are big enough to justify keeping it.

    No ATV needed here.
Although I may scoop up a game cart.

Not so much use for actually "hunting" with the atv, as they are noisy and I believe that it does spook/alert the deer to human activity, but for retrieval it is worth its weight in gold around here. Game carts can be pretty useless in the majority of the areas I choose to hunt. Either is straight up and down or its cedar swamps, dried beaver floods, or 3year old logging cuts.
    Cheers

A lot of the time we have to use them to get where were going and then walk in 1-3 miles. Or a boat.

Very true that a game cart is useless up there. Too many swamps and big rocks. Most of our deer shot back in are quartered up and packed out. The farthest I will drag is 200 yards. :D

I have a side by side, I rarely us it at all for hunting, and don't use it for recovery because that would require having to recover something, and with no kills that speaks for itself.. I used it a little pre season hauling some stands out to the woods. I only use it to ride around with and my kids love it.

I use mine for recovery if it is a long drag. Also use it for shed hunting big fields and for hauling stands etc. preseason. I dont use it to get to stands. Great for running a trapline also.

I've never used mine for hunting...but i use my ATV almost every day. Plowing snow, hauling brush, grading, hauling garbage, ect... ATV use is limited in MN woods during hunting season. But hasn't affected me. Just my 1/2 cent worth of thoughts
