Pretty interesting side by side comparison of the skulls of two 2.5 y/o bucks. The one on the left is a whitetail from NY the one on the right is a Sitka blacktail. Notice that the blacktail skull is shorter and stockier than the whitetail just as the deer are shorter and stockier in body dimensions. (Just for those that are curious; the blacktail scores similar to a 150 class whitetail while the whitetail barely even makes 100.)
Rob, have I told you August is back on again, and near certain this time? Buddy got some great news at work, so he sees nothing holding us back now. Going to begin looking into booking stuff over the next few months. I would give my left arm for a sitka blacktail like that one, or three. LOL Pretty neat comparison!
Good thing I don't have a need for another left arm... Sounds like a friend of mine is changing his mind about reindeer and we may end up going to that island I told you about for deer. We'd be going in mid/late August. He likes the idea that there's no bears there to deal with. He really doesn't like them. (We've had several not so pleasant run ins with them in the past so I can't say I blame him.)
Nice KA, thanks for that. I honestly never thought of it or knew their skulls were that different as well. And right before I read what I quoted above I was thinking, that's a hell of a Blacktail!
On average very similar. Actually, I've seen way more 200# Sitkas than I ever did 200# whitetails in NY but I may see more bucks in a day here than I did in a whole season back there. An average buck runs 120 - 140 lbs. in both places.
