Went for a walk today with my wife. We filled our pockets with white oak acorn that fell after yesterday's rain. When we got home I tested for "floaters" and planted the remaining nuts in the back row of our garden. Looking forward to next spring to see what produces. Figure on transplanting them to the deer woods next fall.

I've had success doing this with maple and black walnut - oh those balck walnuts, they grow like weeds on account of those tree rats! We also collected some locus pods from last year. The seeds look pretty healthy too. I like to experiment at home even to the point of planting samples of my food plot mixes. ;)

way to pay it forward! like 60 years forward! Maybe your grandkid will have a stand in that tree.
I'm just happy to see a decent amount of acorns this year in mid-Michigan. Been a very light crop for 3-4 seasons. I needed something to pull them out of all the corn that's surrounding my woods this year.

Floaters are bad. Shows dead air space.

The deer will nibble on leaves the first 10 years, and then it's another 10 before acorns drop. Maybe a little less if you fertilize?

Oh, and more good news today! My wife told me to make sure I stop by the hardware store after hanging tree stands to buy a new chain saw! :nana: :nana: :nana:

ah, that makes sense. Guess I wasn't thinking about as feed; was focused on how much I like a good oak for tree stands. They hold their leaves longer than anything else.

#37 on the list of "things my wife would never, ever say to me".

Lol, nice. Stihl is the best on the market IMHO. Just don't use ethenol gas in it. I prefer to just buy the redy mixed stuff in a can.

Good job planting the oaks. I have a rediculous grove of white oaks and one of hazelnuts and then another one of a mix of the two. I should post pics of those someday on here. This s the first year they have all had nuts galore on them. Already have a stand setup over each one!

That's a good idea. I've been wanting to start some chestnut trees. Have read that deer love them.

Oh, oops...yeah I meant chestnut trees. Guess I haven't had enough coffee yet, lol. Yeah these are american chestnuts, I have some hazelnuts planted but most of them didn't take for some reason.

Yes deer do love them! I've got a couple feeders and trail cams I need to put out near that area this coming week, I'll pop some pics on here of them. I can't believe how loaded they are with nuts!
