So you have one day during rut to hunt a deer rich property. You've scouted one time, hunted one time and on that one hunt killed one doe and know its a heavily traveled doe trail. You scouted and found a small pond that is 15yd-20yd wide (its a tear drop shape) and there was fresh rubs and all different sizes hood prints all around. This scouting and doe kill was early season. So come rut, do you sit the doe trail where you know if nothing else you can kill a doe if you so feel the desire or do you sit over the pond? Or do you do something totally different and hunt a beat down trail that is on the way to the pond? My thoughts are mixed thus the reason for the post. I want to fall back on the comfort zone and hunt the doe trail but, I have a really strong desire to hunt the pond. That may just be curiosity talking though. Considering I've never really went out hunting for a buck an the only bucks I have seen were on heavily traveled doe routs during rut, that's kind of what I keep going back to.
Lets me spin the table on you...What are your hunting goals? And have they changed after taking the doe? Also don't you still have your 'back 40' that you can hunt for the next couple of months? I don't know the property, but would suspect the rubs and where the bucks cruise after the does would be sound places to be.
During the rut, hunt the does. Everything else goes out the window. The boys will be where the girls are.
During rut, I want to kill a buck tho year really bad. That's my goal. I don't have much promising on my back 40 to be honest. Other than doe activity. I'll be hunting it trying to stack a few more doe in the freezer. Hopefully this will contain my desire to kill deer. I do have a few prospects on the City lot. I only have a couple of hunts to kill a buck during rut on this particular property.
So you have already killed one doe, have another place to go to easily fill the freezer, and you really want to kill a buck? If it were me I would either hunt the pond where there is obviously a buck there or the beaten down path to the pond. Really whichever your gut tells you is the best spot to draw on a buck
