44 mag rifle (Ruger), light short, powerful. 30-06 convenient, plentiful, proven - my Dad used to have a Winchester and if you felt lucky a single shot break action...

A 308 would seem to me, more than you need inside 100yds for deer. Though a 308 is on my someday list...

I don't rifle hunt any more but, have thought about buying another rifle later. Not sure yet if I will or not but, for the hunting around here, most shots are inside 100yd. I believe I would go with a slug gun. Set a nice one up with a nice scope and shoot the Remington Premier AccuTip Sabot slugs. 385gr @ 1900fps and accurate out to 200yd, this should work well for everything from yotes to pigs to deer.

Really, the .30-06 you are using is just fine. All you mentioned are similar, but not really enough differences at that range to go with one over the other, or any of them over your 06. I use a .280 and it works great. I've killed a ton with it from 10yds to 175yds, no issues ever. I think the key is getting a bullet that gives you the performance that matches your gun and hunting situation.

I'm upgrading rifles here in the future so I'm either going to stay with the .06 or get a .308 this time.

I'm pretty much set on a .308. I plan on fondling a Browning X-bolt next week.

Out of the calibers you have listed, I would pick the .308 ..... BUT...

I am not sure what you are looking for? Cost to shoot? Low recoil? Less damage? Woods gun?

Obviously your 30-06 is more than sufficient to destroy a deer at close range ... but my guess is that you are looking for another rifle to kill deer with ...just because!

You simply cannot beat a .30-30 for a 100 yard rifle ... cheap to shoot, low recoil, great knockdown power...

What am I looking for? A solid rifle that is forgiving, reasonably easy to find ammo and at a decent cost but doesn't need to be the cheapest either, reasonable recoil but drops them in their tracks.

.30-30 isn't sexy enough for me. :biggun: ;)

It does not fit his criteria ...WAY too much $ to shoot and WAY too much recoil for Brad's tender shoulder ...
