I'm starting to look into buying a newer used truck. I want a crew cab 4x4. My last truck was an 06 Ram quad cab with the 5.7L Hemi. I loved it. Plenty of power and payload at the time. All i hauled was my 18' Stingray and 16' bass boat. Never had an issue. Now I will be needing something with a little more towing capacity. I plan on buying a tractor, boat and who knows what else in the next few years. Since I have a little gas sipper civic for the commute to work, it won't be a daily driver. So, I'm not too concerned with fuel economy as much as the rest. After all I'm buying it for a work horse. I've narrowed it down to newer 07 or so F250 or Dodge 2500. I have heard Ford has some issues as far as head gasket problems with the Powerstroke but, not sure if it is the 6.0 or 7.3 that has the problem. What has me hung up is can room. The super crew is bigger than the dodge QC but, I really like everything I hear about those big Cummins diesels. I figured some of you guys may have some insight as to which one would be the best choice of the 3. I don't want to Bullydog it up or any of that stuff. 6" lift and bigger tires is probably all it will get aftermarket. No bow-ties either. Too many horror stories about that aluminum Duramax. Oh an one last thing. It will probably be the last truck I buy considering I'll probably only be putting 5-10K on it a year and thats probably stretching it. So, let the opinions fly!! --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?lyxzy5
Toyota Tundra. For what you want in a truck the diesel would never pay for it's self and expensive to maintain.
If he gets a tractor of any decent size, a Tundra isn't going to be pulling it around. Once you pull trailers, any trailers, with a diesel you won't go back to gas.
I have pulled with a diesel an that's why I'm going diesel!! You are right about the Tundra. There is no way I'd hook one of those to a tractor. A Ram 1500 or even a Ram 2500 with the Hemi would probably do but, I just don't want any reason at all to NOT hook up to something. If I am doubting a Hemi there is no way in H$@& I'd even consider a Tundra for it! --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?xx5fbl
Well MadMan, I live 20 miles from anything at all. A trip to the lake, any of the 4 I would go to is a minimum of 40 miles and i would probably end up taking it to the beach some which is 380 miles. I have family 70-85 miles away that I would probably be hauling the tractor to some here and there. --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?gn2vwb
I absolutely agree with getting a diesel if you're doing significant towing, and doing so on a regular basis. I would probably avoid the lift if it's going to seriously be used for work and towing. It's impractical, requires drop hitches (unless you're going gooseneck), and you'll look like every hillbilly in a country song:D With that being said, 1/2 ton speaking, the Tundra will handle everything the 1500 can handle. Both 5.7s are about dead even in HP/Torque, with the advantage going to the Tundra with the torque peaking at lower RPMs, and both have 4.3 rear ends. I'm not saying one is better than the other (I'm a Toyota fan, and I'm not sold on the Tundra), but numbers wise, there is no clear advantage.
I have been doing some cleaning up of scrap recently and have gone over the scales at 18,500 lbs at the heaviest load(truck, trailer, scrap) and probably haul heavier tractor than most guys would use for a food plot.I have had no issues with my 2004 Ram 1500 4X4(quad cab-long box-HEMI). I work on medium duty trucks for a living and we have both the IH(power stroke) and Cummins. I am by far a Cummins fan when it comes to maintenance and repair, very few issues as compared to the V8 diesels. I say "Go Ram"
If you're going Ford.....Go 6.0 not 6.4. I just downsized a bit for work from running Ford Diesels to the Chevy 2500 with a gas 6.0 in it. I've got no complaints. It's hauled everything that the diesel has, with nearly equal mpg. Unless you are pulling a dump truck trailer, you'd be fine.
What about transmissions. Im not sure what Ford is using but isn't Dodge using the Allison? I would really like to find a 6 speed manual to be honest. For heavy towing, I've always liked to be able to keep it in a lower gear without having a computer tell me it's the wrong one and change on its own. That was about the only thing I didn't like about my last Ram. As far as looking like all the other hillbilly's, it won't be a Chevy so I'll be different from everyone else around here anyways. If I were basing it only on engine, I'll probably go Cummins. I'll just have to find a mega cab 2500. For some reason, those aren't easy to come by around here. --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?svna11
