As for a Recurve or Longbow, its all personal preference. I started my traditional hunting/shooting with a Montana. Excellent bow. I was very impressed with it, no hand shock, very quiet and sends my arrows downrange with authority!!! On a side note, my son wanted a recurve so I picked him up a 65' Kodiak Magnum thats a real shooter. His most recent bow is a 69' Bear Grizzly that really smokes an arrow. If I knew what I know now when I started, I would of bought a used bow from the classifieds on tradgang or stickbow, great sites with very good people. Heck I'm willing to bet that you might be able to get a used Montana and a used Grizzly for $300.00, see which one you like and sell the other one if you want! Those old Bear Grizzly's are workhorses and a fun bow to shoot! FYI, there are a couple Montana's in the tradgang classifieds floating around in the $210 range.

If your just starting out I would keep the draw weight at 45# NO MORE than 50#.
