I would play golf since i have terrible knees and wouldnt make it through the first week of practice for football. But if we could turn off the injuries, would that change any of your guys' choices?
Ok... lets' just clear some things up about "just playing golf". It really isn't all sunshine and rainbows trying to play competitive golf at a professional level. IF you are fortunate to even excel enough to give yourself an opportunity to make it to earn money playing golf, that is the very tip of the iceburg. Of course after you have dedicated every second of your existence up until that point. Then the fun starts. You are a number of hundreds... thousands... millions.. of people nation and worldwide attempting to do the same thing. You have to have incredible talent, unmatched determination and self discipline, a lot of breaks, money backing you,etc... I've spent a lot of nights sleeping in my car with my golf clubs bouncing around mini tours trying to make my way to the big show. It is sunup to sundown and then some every single day of your life to even sniff the chance of making it. Every single golfer at your level that you look at on driving ranges or tournaments has the same aspirations you do and very similar if not better ability. It's the most mentally challenging thing you could ever imagine to overcome and make it. And.... to think it doesn't take a toll on your body over time is absurd. Get up at 4:30 and start banging balls or playing 72 holes by 5:30 -6:00 am until 8 or 9 at night.... EVERY SINGLE DAY OF YOUR LIFE!! Get back to me on how you're feeling. It aint a pretty deal. And a hell of a lot of people that try to make a living and go through the sacrifices don't make it. Most that do make it? They are living to make the cut to pay for the next tournament travel expenses, equipment, lodging, entry fees, etc... It probably the longest most difficult road to making a living in a professional sport. There's a lot more behind the scenes than what you see on TV. Not everyone playing golf is a Tiger or Phil story.
I'm choosing my superpowers when it comes to sports, so naturally I won't have to work at it duh! And while yes golf takes a ton of skill, lets not pretend it comes close to the physical endurance and athleticism required in nearly every other sport.
I never said it does. Other sports require more athleticism. The commitment of time that is required to maintain the level of play needed? I don't think anything compares to golf. It's muscle memory with a lot of moving parts. And develop a second nature "feel" for the game. Different than more athletic sports where it's more reactionary and pure athletic ability can be relied on. Endurance? Ehh.. can look at that a few different ways or how you define it. I actually think baseball is one of the better test of endurance of the major sports. 162 games + playoffs, traveling everyday, practicing, etc... That is a long haul! Golf isnt' far behind with the time you have to put in and the grind to maintain. Football.. while obviously being the most physical and demanding on your body, doesn't require the same constant .. long... enduring grind on you mentally and physically.
Well I ran 4 years of D1 Track in college so I would have to say that I reached the highest level with that sport so I will go with track. However, I'm not sure it gets any better than golf. Go to amazing places and just play golf - not so bad! Basketball is my favorite sport - would love to be about 4 to 6 inches taller and be good enough to have even played in college. Still play a lot - love basketball!
When I was young I used to imagine myself playing professional baseball. I started out as a pitcher, but eventually wound up in my fantasies as a second baseman. My wife is too small for any kind of sport. But she thinks she could possibly handle NASCAR. Is that a sport?
