I have my concealed permit and carry a couple different 9's depending on the vehicle. In the wake of everything, my wife wants to, at the very least keep a gun in her vehicle. She's not a heavy gun user and never will be, but with my 2 daughters and her out and about with our busy lives, she wants to be prepared. I don't want to spend a ton because outside of shooting ever so often it will hopefully never see the light of day. My kids are 9 and 14, have a healthy respect for firearms so i'm not worried in the least about them, but we regularly have other kids riding with us from church, sports, school etc. Should I look toward a revolver or stick with the slide pistol? I can get a kel-tec .380 for $255 +tax. Any other suggestions?

.38 has plenty of knockdown and is more user friendly than a semi auto. You can get a nice Taurus for under $400.

Just make sure she understands pulling a gun is not to threaten someone but to shoot someone.

Always worried about people having their own guns turned on them.

Self defenses courses are great as well. For all of you. IMO.

Smith & Wesson J frames are under $400 ($379) and twice the gun.

I work at a gun shop and we sell a lot of Ruger lcr's you can get them in a few calibers but for self defense they have a .357 and a .38 special +p both five shot. Single action with no exposed hammer very user friendly and Ruger is great quality. A little pricier, a bit over $500, but when it comes to quality and possibly someone's life in the balance, I'll pay extra. Just my .02

Also the price I half quoted was msrp, I'm sure a gun shop or online dealer would have a much better price.

What is the advantage of a revolver vs standard, vice versa? In the heat of the moment, I kind of like the idea of having to slide the hammer as it creates a second of "thinking time". On the flip side I know that if she felt the danger to use it, I believe she will have moved past the need to contemplate using it.

In some cases this is the best gun for a wife.

I like the revolver for a woman and my piece of mind. I'm not trying to be derogatory to women but your average woman who isn't a big pistol shooter type will have a lot easier time with the revolver. Just point and pull the trigger, no slides or jams to worry about. There is a flip side though, like everything, less rounds not as fast on the reload but let's be honest the average dirtbag whatever his reason for messing with anyone's old lady is going to run away if they start getting shot at. Not that that will always happen but I believe for the most part, not to mention if something happens that is so severe that it warrants shooting to kill and let me be clear there is no other shooting. If you pull your weapon, like states before it is being drawn to shoot not scare and when it is fired it should be fired to kill. That's why for me in this instance I would feel more confident with a revolver. However my wife also shoots my Springfield .40 and if she keeps doing well with it and feels confident we may just go with a semi-auto but I feel there should be a good base knowledge and experience before you give someone a semi-auto as a self defense weapon. To start off I would go with the revolver, besides you can always upgrade :D

The LCR is double action only

Why choose a revolver over a pistol? Easy. Short of a catastrophic failure a revolver cannot fail. Many women also have issues with properly working a slide on a pistol.

My husband bought me a S&W Ladysmith, .38/.357 magnum. It's loaded with .357 magnum JHPs. The advantage to the revolver is that it's not going to jam. And if you get a dud round, you just pull the trigger again. The Ladysmith carries five rounds in the cylinder. I'm very small, but the gun still fits me.

Working the slide on a semi-auto should not be a factor. You would be carrying with a round in the chamber anyway. If you need a gun to defend yourself, there's a good chance you need it right now. Taking the "thinking time" to chamber a round could give her assailant just enough time to take the gun away. But if it should jam...

My husband has drilled into me that a gun is not for threatening or scaring people. If you pull your gun, the next step is to aim and shoot. If you don't need to shoot someone, you leave it in your bag. (I have a purse that is speciallly designed for concealed carry.)

By the way, they emphasized the 21 foot rule in my CCW class.

S&W revolvers seem to have an excellent reputation.

She makes to much money for this one :)

Thanks for the replies, I going to borrow a friends revolver and let her shoot it this weekend.

    2. A revolver is a pistol

Wrong, actually. A revolver is a revolver. A semi-auto is a pistol. Refer to any revolver as a pistol on your 4473's and the ATF will be performing a full audit.

    They are both, however, handguns.

Ah! I stand corrected! However I will say, that when you call NICS you only have to elude to the weapon being a handgun or long gun. But it does have to be on the 4473 in part D for the file :) you win lol

Alright next question. Anybody relatively close to me want to unload a revolver for a fair price?

Honestly, for the price of a quality small frame revolver it's worth it to buy new and get a factory warranty. If you don't mind me asking what are you budgeting for?

To be honest, when I seen that kel-tec .380 @ $255 + tax. My mind is hovering around $300, because I have a hard time justifying a pricey piece that will not be shot other than familiarizing herself and the ever so often practice.

Hey Brandon... Long time no see/talk buddy, hope all is well.

Have you shot the Kel-tec? It has quite the uncomfortable jump... But then again... it's not designed to be fun to shoot... just a heads up as I used to have one... If you have time to look around I sold mine for $175... Saw another one priced the other day at $180, used though....
