Which broad head do you like the nap killzone or the slicktrick grizztrick 2 I know ones a mechanical ones not but which one do you think gets more penetration? also I know a lot of people use slick trick magnums, But has anyone evr used the grizztrick 2? How did it perform?
Arrow set up (FOC, overall weight...and such) dictate more about penetration than the head. Nearly every head has penetrating ability these days (if not 100% of them) but some guys shoot as an extreme exaggeration a straw of an arrow set up ad blazing speeds but it's still a straw...something to think about. Arrow weight and FOC will have more to say about how deep the broadhead gets pushed in and possibly through than what is on the tip.
Listen to Ty, he speaks the truth. I will say, even though iv never shot either head, I would be more likely to go with the fixed grizztrick. I like the simplicity and reliability of a fixed blade and iv been nothing but impressed by slick trick heads
I agree there are plenty of heads that penetrate well but the head is probably the most important factor to penetration than any other factor. A 2 blade cut on contact , especially a single bevel design will out penetrate most any other design out there. Especially when compared to a mechanical. This doesn't matter to most but is of utmost importance to low poundage, short draw archers. Foc, arrow weight and tune are also vital components to the penetration formula. I will default to Tfox in that his knowledge of arrow set ups including heads is probably more practiced than mine. He does make a very valid point that low poundage shooters need coc heads more so than your heavy pound drawers. I guess where I was going was take two equal set up bows as far as draw length, poundage and same shooter a heavier set up will have more punch behind it...obviously one can go to the extreme heavy and it would be just as detrimental as too light. Hence why you hear of guys shooting 50lb recurve bows with arrow setups twice the common compound hunter getting complete pass through shots.
I agree those other factors are major players and most heads are very well designed and will get the job done from average setups. I've built some arrows for my son that were only about 360 gr but he was only shooting 38#-40# with sub 24" draw length. He had passthroughs with that setup because he was utilizing cut on contact heads such as magnus stinger buzzcuts. One even stuck in a tree after passthrough. Magnus makes some good heads from everything I've heard by those I trust for an honest opinion (you included)
