I don't believe there is a specific call for a specific time of the rut. In fact, I have tried all those calls during various times of the season much less during the rut.

The buck grunt and doe bleat is a good example. You can use those calls anytime. But obviously your calling is more likely to work during the rut.

What you need to do is try different calls at different times and see how it works for you. As long as you don't call too much using the wrong call typically will not hurt you.

    Just start experimenting. Good luck.

    for me personally...
i like to use doe bleat and grunt tube all year long. i do regular calls til the per rut, by this i mean the grunts and bleats that signal that i'm a deer and i'm here.
when pre-rut comes, i use more challenge grunts, and when i know they are starting to get friskie i will use the rattle bag.
also when i know the rut is on i like using lots of challenge grunts with a doe in heat bleat and i throw in some snort wheezes.

in the 09 season i called in both the bucks i harvested.
in archery, i had 2 doe go by my stand, and as soon as they were out of sight i started estrus bleating, and added a couple buck grunts. within a few minutes i had a nice buck grunting and coming in.
in rifle season, bored from a slow morning after some really dense fog had rolled thru. i decide to do a bunch of challenge grunts and snort wheezes. after the second round of calling i heard crashing off in the distance, so i did it again. as soon as i had finished calling and wheezing, i had a buck pissed off and charging into my area.
best way to learn is try out different things and watch hunting videos. i learned a bunch by watching movies and reading. one of my favorite videos on calling is..... Mastering The Art, guide to calling deer. it's a primos video
    good luck :)

I thinkl calls can be a great asset, that said in areas that have pressure I do not use one I think mature deer are really call shy, I have seen them shy away from real grunts from deer they cannot see.

I honestly beleive the best call is the Grunt Snort Wheeze at the begining of the chase period. I have had great luck with it.

Keep in mind it's just not what works for "deer in your area". What works one day will not work the next and likewise calls that don't work today may work tomorrow. It can change so fast so quick.

Like I said just experiment a little bit and don't be afraid to try new things when you get something to work. Once you get a little experience, you will just go on "feel". Sometimes you will be right and sometimes you won't. That is the nature of the beast.

50% of calling is not the calls at all, it is the location. What I mean by that is if you grunt at a buck that is 100 yards away and the buck can see all the ground were the call came from they do not need to come and check it out. They can see from were they are. In areas that are more open I like to a decoy.

I also see a lot of hunter use there grunt call and just blow contact calls. There are many types of grunt call and they need to be used according to what is going on at that time of year. If you learn all the grunt call and use them at the right time of the hunting season you will call deer to your stand.
