Curious to see some different answers. When two toms come in do you shoot the strutter or the less dominant bird? I have heard both sides. Thanks.
I prefer to shoot the more dominant bird but which ever tom overs me the best shot opportunity. As long as it is a adult bird I am happy. Like I said, I will wait for the bigger bird but if the less dominant gives me a better opportunity then I will take him.
To me it kind of depends on which state I'm hunting. If I'm in a state that allows 2 birds I would probably shoot the less dominant bird first because the dominant one will more than likely return to that same area then you can fill both tags. Otherwise I would try to shoot the larger of the two.
Honestly I would try to shoot what I think is the more dominant bird, but like one of the birds I shot last year with the bow, I ended up shooting what I thought was the less dominant, because he stood still and gave me the better shot.
It doesnt matter to me, dead is dead. Whichever one gives me a good shot first i guess. Jake, TOm, Bearded hen.... it doesnt matter, its all about the thrill of the hunt for me.
If the cover allows, I am always looking at the spurs with my binos. I go for the longest spurs. If the grass is too tall to see the spurs, I take the strutter.
