I pretty much live now where I grew up. We did live in Colorado back in 92-94 and I absolutely loved it out there. If I were to live somewhere else, Colorado would definitely be at the top of my list. But I am pretty satisfied where I am right now.
How many of you live in the same area you were born and raised? - I live 8 miles south of where I was born and raised What made you stay? - I was a farmkid up until I went to college. And I want the same for my kids, and to raise my kids in a rural environment, and the perspective in life it offers. If you had the choice to live ANYWHERE in the U.S. would you still pick where you live? - Fortunately, I lived in the city for 7 years and experienced most all it had to offer. And the city has plenty to offer, especially for the young, single, outgoing person. I feel that with my education and background I could find a job almost anywhere, and even make more money. But money definately isn't everything. I love not living next to anybody, I love having my own farm and acreage, I like attending a small church where you know everybody, and I like that I haven't been stuck in traffic for almost 4 years now. I enjoy visiting the city. My 2 brothers and sister all live in big cities... but i'm just glad I don't live in one anymore. Listen to 'Western Skies' by Chris Ledoux. Kind of takes the words out of my mouth.
Wow! That's a pretty interesting circumstance, Steve. To think you're living AND doing something that was dictated based off your family circumstances. My hats off to you, bud. As for me, I REALLY don't want to limit myself to just one area, but truly, the area of PA I live in is VERY nice. Great fishing (stream/creek mostly), I have access to almost 1300 acres of private land to hunt between my club and parents, and the cost of living is low. I HATE (and I mean HATE) our winter length (not sure how you true northerners do it). After deer season ends, I have absolutely no desire to be around our cold weather, and as such, I do foresee myself spending a few months in SC or GA when I'm retired. However, I really find it hard to leave my family. My wife is very close with her family as am I, and we both are from here, so I doubt we will ever leave permanently, but I wouldn't mind a change of scenery every so often.
I went to school 2hrs away in Bloomsburg, we've lived in Chambersburg and Carlisle both of which are about an hour away and currently live about 25 minutes from where i grew up. If i hear something soon about a job opportunity, we'll be settling in the State College area. My wife's family is somewhat local and luckily we both landed good jobs in this area. Makes sense for us to stay around and i have no desire to leave.
I now live within 15 miles of where I was raised...someday I will turn to dust inside the borders of georgia. I have been offered positions in Texas, Arizona and a few other places through work but georgia is my home. I can be in atlanta in 20 minutes for anything a city has to offer, or I can be hunting in 15 minutes...can't beat that.
Lived in this area for 30 years, before that I 3000 miles from here. I have moved all over the country with the military or the financial business. Something keeps pulling me back, maybe seeing the sunrise over the Sierras.
I live about 5 hours South of where I was raised. I moved to raise my kids in a better area. We love it.
I grew up in rural Upstate New York. I left for college and then Uncle Sam dragged me off to Southeast Asia for a couple years. Met a Southern Belle while stationed at Fort Benning, got married and settled in Georgia. Moved to Maryland for 25 years, work related. When my wife died I moved back to the homestead in NY. Bought a lot in the woods off my brother who lives a couple hundred yards down the hill in the house I was born and raised in. I can live anywhere I want. This is where I chose to end my days. As Dorothy said, "there's no place like home.... there's no place like home". LOL I know there are places that would be considered "BETTER"... but I chose here.
