Probably the only one here who wouldn't mind living in a southern state. I have my eye on SC or NC for partial retirement someday (most likely stay there during the post-hunting winter months). I really don't enjoy winter too much outside of hunting season, and I could see myself getting more and more into flyfishing.

Out west is certainly desirable with Colorado being number one due to the lack of humidity, TONS of offroading, great hunting, good fishing, and close other western states with the same advantages.

I have to say, though, that where I live is pretty solid for fishing (TONS of trout streams), hunting is average, but still better than some. Plus, I work in a rural area, but make a decent wage (cost of living is relatively low unless you want to buy land).

Talk to me in 5-10yrs once this natural gas play is truly established, and we'll see if my opinion has changed.

Somewhere surround by miles of woods with enough open fields to grow what we need and all four seasons.

Edit: If I can't have that I am very content to stay right where I am.

You're wierd !! :poke: Actually not so weird. Dinners used to consist of a big hot meal... the same as supper. Us farm boys were fed good so they could work us like dogs. Now they just work us like dogs and we have to bring our own dinner which is nothing more then a sandwich lunch now days.

I've been In Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Montana. I'd take any of those places In a heartbeat In the mountains. I'd be there right now If I wouldn't of bought the milk hauling business. I really wish I would've made the move 15 years ago.

My parents live in Phillips area...Dad works in Hawkins and Park Falls is on the way back up here...They know when grouse season is starting by all the birds that show up literally dozens can be littering the roadsides as road kill that were not there 2 weeks before. Most releases are around Glidden to keep the numbers up and so they can still claim the supposed capital. BTW we have guys up here that raise Hungarians, Pheasants, Quail, and Ruffs for training...little tougher to keep than chickens but not much different. Also if you want to see alot of grouse the areas around Ashland, Bad River, Cheguamegon peninsula, and Rainbow Lake wilderness(I'm not telling you where on the MI side), just look at google satellite images- where there is aspen regen there are grouse. (prob'ly just ticked some people off with that info)

I don't want to get too far off topic but......................

I actually have not hunted grouse very much in the Park Falls area. Most of the grouse hunting I have done IS in the Three Lakes and Eagle River area in the Nicolet.

I agree there are tamer birds in some areas than others but from my experience northern Wisconsin doesn't have tame birds very much at all.

And what is this about "Farm raised birds"?

This is the first time I have ever seen anyone say that, without making a joke.

    Maybe you were joking.

I'm torn. I'd like to live right on a nice beach or out west in the mountains. I like both and think I'd enjoy either.

I haven't been to Texas since I was a young kid, but was in Oklahoma a couple years ago. I liked Oklahoma, I believe I would like texas as well.

Ahhhh, its like the wives tale that whitetail outfitter release penned deer to grow bigger bucks around their area.

Sorry, but grouse outfitters aren't stocking ruffed grouse around the Park Falls area. It would be illegal. To release farm raised birds in WI you need to have a game farm license or be the DNR. How do I know this? Because my family has a game farm license for pheasant, quail and chukar not far from Hawkins. Jump River, to be exact. My brother also used to raise pheasants, so I know what it takes to raise birds.

    1) I hate all their stupid little sayings "Don't mess with Texas", "Everything is bigger in Texas", etc
    2) They all believe Texas is the greatest place on the history of the planet.
    3) It's basically Mexico North.
    4) It's probably the ugliest place on the planet outside of the hill country.
    5) Dallas.
    6) Crappy beaches.
    7) No public land.
    8) Property taxes.
    9) Tex Mex.
    10) Pointy cowboy boots.

Eastern part of Langlade county, Wisconsin or Southwest boonies of Pikes Peak area of Colorado where I use to live.
I would throw Mountain Home, Ark in there also as beautiful fishing on the white and Norfolk Rivers for trout.
