I have a couple absolutes. I know I will NOT hunt whitetails in an enclosure during my lifetime. Yet, It doesn't bother me a bit to hunt bears over bait; Funny thing is, I have never killed a bear over bait, only from my deer stands or spot and stalk. There is something about predators and baiting versus baiting prey animals for me. Its personal I guess. I dont care much about what others do as long as its legal, I however have a ton of respect for guys that do things themselves and the hardway versus just taking the easiest way out. Finally, if I need a guide to get to hunt whitetails in Sas or Moose and or Sheep in AK then so be it. I like making new friends, life is short its about the relationships we make not the biggest set of antlers on the wall.
Never say never, I've hunted wild boar inside a fence and had fun doig it. I knew what it was and had a good time with friends. I've hunted elk, bear and antelpoe with an outfitter and have no problems with that either. I'm pretty much open for most types of hunting. You just have to know what you're getting into and take it for what it is. Some may be more hunting and some might be thought of as killing. I can have a good time doing either.
So if public land had a low fence on it you wouldnt hunt it? Ill hunt hogs over bait not deer. Ill hunt hogs in an enclosure not deer. Ill hunt at an outfitter if given the chance but I wont actively pursue that hunt. I like to beat deer at their own game where they have the advantage not me.
I get a kick out of the public versus private land debate, and to me you just can Not blanket judge anyone or anything. I have permission to hunt 120 acres within 12 miles of the house. I share that ground with 5 other BowHunters. There is a fairly large tract of public ground which receives very little pressure during Bow season, and if it weren't for the 2 hour plus round trip to get there and back I'd hunt it much more. In this case private ground is not so private Dan
Nate, I'm not sure where you are going with that question, I have never seen public land where they invested the money to low fence it? It's hard to find public land here where they marked it with signs to tell you it's public. These kind of questions get bounched around on forums all the time and people get pissed off one way or the other and generally turn into a Texas against everyone else kind of thing. I don't want to get envolved in one of those type of things. I don't care what other people do, I dont want to hunt any property that is fenced in high or low for deer. For hogs or pigs I would go into the fence and "Kill" a hog for meat and fun. Again to each his own, my decision has nothing to do with ethics.
I was just asking because a lot of our public land here has fence around it. Its low fence of course but I doesn't hender deer movement at all IMO. Its fenced becase a lot of it borders private land or other WMAs which you may not have a permit for and not be allowed on. I was just curious not trying to start an argument.
Once again someone throws the state I live in under the bus I LOVE the Texas stereotype I mean everyone knows I have a 20 acre high fence behind my house with exotics, 200" whitetail and 10 feeders going. Thats how I kill big buck every year
Jim, sorry man lol. I truely didn't want that to happen, again I get suckered into these things everytime these topics come up. :D you got any hogs in the fence I need some pork?
You would be hard pressed to find any public ground in Iowa that is not low-fenced. Our fencing laws for livestock require landowners to fence cattle "out" not "in". That being said, there is no such thing as low-fencing a deer. It's simply not possible. A low fence is no more barrier to a deer than a downed log. Not trying to start anything with you, just pointing out that you may not realize low fencing has nothing to do with deer movements.
JimIV you forgot to mention the ear tags the deer are sporting. Ya gotta know if your shooting Snowflake or Champ. Can't take a chance on getting those hand fed deer mixed up!
It's alright, I was just ribbing you a little too:D I just like to try and break down the "Texas hunting" stereotype, not that it's ever going happen Oh, and no pigs in my high fence:D
I asked for people's opinions....not absolutes....or their judgemental jabs. That's good stuff, Huntingson. Thanks for offering that opinion. To some guys it IS about those things. They're entitled to their opinions, same as you Dan. You'd do well to follow your own advice, Dan.
Who cares, if you want to do it and it may be fun and that is all the matters!!! My line is mine As for Texas they screw everything up for us all
Wow!! Jeff I don't think I ever said anybody was Not entitled to their opinion, but as far as I am concerned if anybody hunts legal regardless of equipment choice they are more than welcome to hunt with me. I always tell everyone that hunts with me kill what you want. Even though I have my self imposed guidelines I sure would Not expect anyone else to adhere to them. As far as your second statement? That comes from you, someone who has Never met me, and therefore sure does Not know me. Matter of fact you refused to drive 30 miles to meet, so I don't think I will worry about what YOU think. Anybody that really knows me they could tell you that you are way off base. I really wish you'd start calling out someone else. Greg had his turn as have others, and I think I've had mine. Time for you to move on!! Dan
Only thing I did was quote what you wrote, Dan. Your background in belittling mine and others' pursuits preceeds you. It just amazes me what you say.....then do.
I don't have to belittle your accomplishments Jeff Just because I would not kill the animals you do doesn't mean squat, except you let it. We hunt different areas. I've Bowhunted 40 years & you've hunted what? 5 years? and therefore I have different goals and limits on myself. Don't take it personally. Nor do I belittle anyone else's for that matter as everyone has different goals. Once you Bowhunt 20 to 40 years I'm guessing you will look back and understand things more clearly. Like I said if you actually knew anything about me I might be bothered by your statement but that is Not the case. If you want to pick, quote, and twist every post I make how do you expect me to react? If you want to continue to assault me with your crap at least have the decency to do it through PM's. Try showing some respect and you might get it back in return. Dan
I couldn't agree more. At one point it was about killing ANY ANIMAL, then it became about killing a BUCK, ANY BUCK, then it became about the hunt, how I did it, the situation of the hunt, etc. Now it's about getting some meat in the freezer and hoping that opportunity at the big buck is looming for me. For me it has become about getting into position to kill that animal without that animal EVER knowing I was there, and whether I kill it or not, I know I've "won" in the battle of senses. I gave up gun-hunting (all "guns" MZL included several years ago after I killed one and realized it just didn't "excite" me anymore. The "THRILL" was gone. At that point, I knew I'd not likely hunt with a gun again. I still enjoy shooting, just no desire to hunt with them. I have no desire to hunt inside a fence or with an outfitter unless those are the conditions in which I am required to hunt in order to kill the species I'm after. I really am not overly fond of baiting, however, if YOU choose to do so, and it's legal, more power to you, as it's really none of my business. If we all find each day afield fulfilling in some way, shape, or form, then our "goals" in hunting have been "accomplished." Good Hunting to all!!!
