Will is 100% correct. Yes I "neglect" my family for a few hrs a week during bow season, but my wife yes I need to do it or I will not be the man she fell in love with nor will I be the father that she knows I can be without it. What I don't understand is why some people have to get so angry over this thread. It's just like debating any HOF in any sport...some people think some guys shouldn't be there and others believe he should.. why is it so hard to debate on these forums without it turning personal?
This has nothing to do with ANY other sport.. cause in hunting.. it's about killing. The moment you kill without intention of eating the animal or for some silly record.. you are vain.. it's not about being good or great.. killing for others to see what you have "done" in your lifetime is vanity (if your not consuming the animal). Now.. I don't care if another man chooses to do it.. but I'm not about to look at him in any other way than what he is.. and he is what he is.. whoever that is. And its possible that I am in fact totally wrong.. maybe Chuck Adams has eatin' everything he's ever shot and killed.. but.. that's a longshot.. and I'm betting against that. If he has.. than he has my UTMOST respect. But sorry.. admiring a hockey player a baseball player etc.. is TOTALLY different than a man who chases down world record animals for recognition and not food. I'm not the ethics police.. I care not what any other man does with his time.. but I understand and recognize vanity when I see it.. even when I see it in myself.. which is often the hardest to see. It is vain to hunt down an animal and kill it just so some idiots on the internet and on the couch know who you are..
so is it vain to have a Hall of Shame? Maybe there shouldn't be a Hall of Fame for hunting. Id like to hear more if anyone is opposed to a Hall of Fame and why? Guys we can talk about this without an arguement, it's called debating...healthy debating...gets us thinking and talking, don't get so serious about it, it's just like argueing about who would have won in their prime...Tyson or Ali?? been debated for years now, it's fun...and for the record...Tyson would have KO'd Ali in the 4th.:d

I don't believe in donating an animal I shot.. because I KNOW that the true reason I shot the poor SOB was to kill it.. to get that recognition from the kill ETC ETC ETC.. Will, Some go through life being selfish to gain happiness. I go through life (trying) to do what is required of me and find the happiness in it. Although I have my fair share of fun in this life, only when I accomplish something that benefits others am I truly happy with my accomplishments. Not sure I understand this question/statement. I have not ever tried to change anyone. I have hoped that my influence might change some people. (children, friends) I would never think it right to change someone, especially for my benefit.
No reason to be offended Jeff.. none at all. No one is calling names.. or saying what you or anyone else does is wrong.. I'm simply calling a spade a spade.. cause that's what it is. Jeff.. if you know the family.. they've come to expect it.. your doing a wonderful thing for them by giving them the meat.. and no one is saying that Mr. Adams is not doing something great either. But.. this is where we're not seeing eye to eye.. Mr. Adams doesn't travel all the way to Africa or wherever to donate meat to some villagers.. he does it to KILL something with really big horns... that's vanity.. that's what it's called. He wants to kill a GIANT with GREAT BIG horns.. why.. to get the recognition from it. No reason to be offended over it. It is what it is. I have deer on my wall.. all were eatin' by me.. but they're still there and I'm at least partially vain for having them hung for all the world to semi-gawk at (they're all rather small really). and I accept that.. but I don't understand why it's so gut-wrenching for some peeps to be labeled as being vain.. we ALL are at some point in our usually weekly or monthly travels.. it is what it is. I'm just being real.. .. but I'm still not sure why we are debating.. he's in the HOF cause he deserves it.. isn't that what this threads about?
yeh I agree vanity is part of for me, but I also love deer meat. As far as Chuck, he maybe vain, but that silly tobogin in July isn't a good fashion statement for vanity!:d
Jeff.. now we're being ridiculous. Nobody said it wouldn't be hard or ridiculous to bring back meat from Africa. But.. killing something for the recognition is vain.. it is and always will be. A man can lie all he wants.. he/she killed it to show it off in some way.. VA admits to it.. I certainly do.. what's the big deal? So you're telling me Jeff.. you didn't just want to kill that doe who came by.. just to kill it.. to have that rush of adrenalin.. to get that recognition each time you spoke with another man.. and all that other stuff..?? Making it tougher does not change the end result. Unless, of course you just like the idea of being able to say "I did it with a trad bow".
How does killing a doe make a guy vain? I have killed ALOT of deer that I didn't consume. Some were donated, most were given to friends and neighbors. I'm just trying to see where you are coming from Duke?
Duke, I go to Africa for the total experience. The culture is absolutley amazing, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, and I get to hopefuly meet people with different viewpoints. I look for rocks to bring home. I take boat loads of clothing/shoes to share. I look for foreign currency to give to my children. Oh yeah, I also go to hunt-I hunt with no expectations. I let the chips fall where they may. You can conjure and you can speculate all you want, but honestly, until you've been there. You haven't a clue why people visit this wonderful place. Do you know what it's like to give meat to a family of eight who sees less than a pound of protein in a given month? Yeah, that's vanity alright! There are no rules to this. We can make the best or the worst of it; I pray we all make the best of it. By the way, I would bring every ounce of meat back home from Africa if our government allowed it. I would consume every speck-it's that good. However I can't. It does my soul well to know that I am contributing to wildlife conservation and trickle down economics. The people and Africa's wildlife are much better off as a result. I don't think you can argue about that. Sure, as humans we are all taught to display our accomplishments-call it mounts, trophies, memorabilia, souvenirs, whatever. But don't think for a second that's the only reason we do things. Many times the refrigerator art is merely the icing on the cake! That's being real!
Well then, if showing pictures of one’s accomplishments is now such a huge taboo (it’s done so for simple recognition and has nothing to do with sharing the experience), then the guy who asks to see it at the end of every post should get a “sack punch”. Why not, he is certainly a conspirator to the vanity thing?
Dude... Huck.. I'm not sure what your seeing or reading.. but you're taking this WAY to personal. I never said ANYTHING bad about Africa.. or guys who go there to hunt.. look past yourself and your motives for just a minute and you'll clearly see this. That was an example.. you took it as an insult to yourself.. you took my past posts in this thread personally.. their was no reason for this. If any man.. and I don't care who.. travels to some far off place.. it don't matter where.. to go out and get some sort of record.. on any animal.. he's doing it for recognition (desire of ones self).. the recognition of that record.. and that.. that is being vain. YOU CANNOT ARGUE OR DEBATE THIS FACT. The problem here is.. simply the reader taking what is being said and some how taking it personally and not objectively. I can't be any clearer.. Their is NO conspiracy to the definition of being vain.. It's not taboo to show ones pictures.. and who said it was.. You're making a MOUNTAIN out of a mole-hill.. and it's incredible to watch unfold. The very definitions of vanity are clear as day.. and it is what it is.. whether IAMYOURHUCKLEBERRY likes them or not.
