Hey guys I am wondering where you begin scouting for deer. Do you start at like a creek and look for a sign then go from there or what do you look for??

One place is a food source and backtrack from there.

That being said, right now is not the best time to be scouting. You might end up bumping all the deer off your property. Scouting needs to be done well before the season starts. But you can get by with some small intrusions this time of year.

First off, what types of land are you going to be hunting? Farmland? Thick brush/deep woods? This is really important for food sources. The farmland is more obvious when it comes to feed sources however the deep woods is really hard to guage in my opinion. I hunt the thick woods and I watch for runways, ridges, and what type of tree's/ terrain regarding swamps, hardwoods, etc. In the thick woods I feel the deer usually browse when it comes to feeding. There isn't one place to look when it comes to food sources. Places to check are recently logged woods because of the fresh brush that's on the forest floor, places with large oaks for the acorns they produce, and one place I like to watch for is cedar swamps or forests. The deer tend to like a lot of that cedar IMO. Also look for rubs this time of the year and deer poop is a definitely a great indication.

To also help you look over the land, try to find some satellite photos of the land you are going to navigate. It helps cut your scouting time in half at least. Otherwise, talk to a buddy or friendly people who have knowledge of where you're going to hunt. Hope this all helps! :tu:

Let your instincts guide you, walk in the woods keep your eyes open. Deer like us want the path of least resistance. You do that you'll find what your looking for no doubt.

Make your own food source the deer will come just make sure its well before season or the deer will notice, deer are very smart and kinda know when its season. Put up trail cameras to see what kind of deer are on your land make sure to do it on a trail or in front of a food source.
