I typically just gut them where I find them around here in the midwest. Last year I got a buck that got across the property line so I contacted the landowner. He was interested to see which buck I killed and came out with me. As I began dragging it after tagging it he asked what I was doing. I told him that he let me access his property to get the buck I am extending the courtesy to gut it on the property we had access. He responded BS! Gut it here so I can hunt over it tommorow. He then told me that he has taken his best bucks over gut piles on Sunday of the WI gun season! I was happy as it was a LOT less weight to be dragging back to the property so I could get him on the deer cart.
I alway guy them where they lay to make the drags easier. I'm in IL and I don't know anyone who doesn't gut them where they lay.
Usually where they lay for me, unless it is like on a main trail I might drag them just a short distance.
Were they lay shot one 2 years ago gutted it right their hunted the same stand the next day buck walked in smelled where the guts were kept walking in shot him lol I don't think it makes a difference
Thers are a couple different variables I see here. Is this private property that you exclusively hunt? if so do what you wanna do..... if this is leased ground and its in writting where its to be done then you must follow those rules..... if your in a hunting party and the majority of the group feels its in everyones best interest to do it in a designated area, then unfortunately majority rules..... IMO if you are hunting with a group of guys and its a large track of land and you have access to an ATV I would try to drag the deer to a different location to dress the animal as to not potentially harm anyone elses chances at hunting in or around my immediate area. If you dont have access to an ATV I dont see any option for the guy but to dress it where it lays and drag it from there.
I gut them where they lay unless it right in the middle of a field, then ill drag em in the woods a bit.I leave my gut piles there too,I've had some people say that it attracts coyotes to that area but ive never had any problems like that.Plus it's good to leave it where you shot it in case Wardens feel the need to ask questions...then you take them right to it...sometimes their funny that way.
We always gut at a designated location; just to the east of the pond closest to the cabin. Why we chose there? I have no idea. Then we just have a short drag to the meat rack behind the cabin where we have running water (hose), block and tackle, lights, etc.
Also helps that we have a large garden where I can get rid of the guts. If you live in town or dont have woods where the heck do you go with 40 lbs of junk?
I will not gut a deer where it falls if I plan to hunt that area again anytime soon. Yeah, I know that a gut pile doesn't really have any affect on deer, but I don't think anyone can convice me that a pack of coyotes howling and having a good time feasting on that gut-pile overnight isn't going to hurt my chances in that spot for a while.
True but foxes and squirrels and other critters more then likely will have their feast at it as well if not before Yotes so don't really think it matters as much as you think.... Just my opinion though and add to it more then likely the deer runs 50-100yds if not further from your stand where you shot it
If it falls near a stand location I will move the deer to a more convenient place to do the gutting. I don't think the guts and blood will spook deer but the extra human scent and even the predator/scavenger that come later may.
My back is definitely not in the best of shape, therefore, I'm not dragging any more of that deer out of the woods than I want to eat. That means I keep the heart, kidneys and the liver, but the rest of the innards I leave for the coyotes and foxes. I don't have a 4 wheeler, or a side by side (wish I did) but even if I did, I still can't see transporting out of the woods anything I'm not going to use.
We get them out of the woods and bring em up to the house and hang em up, get them in a big tub then go dump the gut pile.
I always drag them to a section of property that I don't hunt due to coyotes being heavy in the area it draws them to that part of the property and away from my hunting area.
