so im 20 and ive been shootn a bow since i was about 5, ive hunted many differnet places, but have found city/urban hunting seems to be some of the best....what do u think?
I've hunted from small suburban areas, to large unbroken tracts fo timber. Give me good old farmland mixed with hardwoods every time. I hate the suburb stuff even though I know there is potential for big deer, and am forced to hunt that way or not at all sometimes. Big woods hunting is tough, scouting plays a HUGE role.
We hunt mule deer in some rural areas and they are tough to hunt, most likely it's due to it being a rifle zone. Anytime they see you they just take off and run and never come back. The whitetail around the city are alot more domestic and spook WAY less. They just seem to be more relaxed and a little less on edge.
I hunt 150 yards from the main road in my small town city. Someone has killed a buck near this spot which it was poached aka spotlighted. But the deer scored 172 1/2 inches. So urban areas can be great but id pick a farm with some fields and alot of timber any day of the week.
I hunt over 3 Main properties all belonging to my grandfather who hunts with muzzle loader so I have the land to myself most of the time. One property is 80 Acres of CRP and pine trees, another is a 45 acre valley filled with thickets (My personal favorite), and the final is a small 30 acre grove. All within 10 minutes of our small town.
hey man im from pittsburgh too and congrats on joinin the website but anyhow i like urban hunting i hunt all around the city like i hunt right off the rt 8 exit off of 28 and i can see the city a mile away but thats fun and i shoot deer there but i also like to hunt the propertys i have in the country since im from plum right outside of monroeville. how about u.
I have hunted big woods most of my life, but in the last 5 years I have been fortunate to sprinkle that with mixed farm area type hunts and some urban hunts as well. I agree with rybo, I'll take the farms and woodlots everytime.
i started out bowhunting brushpiles in southern pa. loved it. now that i've moved, i have hunted big wood lots for the past couple years. it definitely takes a little more scouting and homework to figure the deer out. i would take farmland any day to hunt.
Urban areas can definately be hotbeds for deer action. I have improved my urban hunting by using climbpaws with a tree saddle. I don't burn small woods areas because I walk in and get up the tree with everything I need with me and leave the same way. I make sure I have 4 or 5 places scouted and then rotate between them depending on wind and I never have to leave any stands or steps behind.
I hunt mainly two areas of land. mostly farm land with CRP fields and small patches of woods. I do have one piece of land with a nice bean field for the farm and a good size woods with a swamp, thats my HONEY HOLE
