If we are ever in a place you feel you need to repond for me, don't, I'll be hauling ass or ducking for cover. First how good of a shot are you?
Good one. So what did you mean, then? I obviously thought that you insinuated that concealed carry shouldn't be necessary at work.
Unless you work for the military, or law enforcement, I don't think its "necessary". I'm all for concealed carry, but if I felt I need it to feel safe at work, I would get a different job. And you know Hook has a plush office job, so if he felt the need to have a gun there, its probably time to go somewhere else. My issue with concealed carry is when idiots feel the need to carry in completely unnecessary places. No offense Texans.
Quite proficient. 45 now. Shooting regularly since I was 16. Father was expert marksman on Indianapolis SWAT team for years. That in itself means nothing, other than explaining that he drilled two things into my head since I was an early teen: Safe gun handling (we always had guns around the house and I cleaned his service revolver from the time I was around 12 or so) and consistent, safe shooting. Took me to the range almost weekly even in late middle school/high school. Made me apply for CCP on my 18th birthday and have carried since then. I will hit center mass every shot @ 25 with my Kimber Ultra Carry. No bragging here. I'm sure there are many on this board who could hand me a whipping on the range, and, I'm not going to beat the folks on Shooting USA, etc., but I'll hold my own solidly on the range as an above average shooter. Share reloading responsibilities with two friends as well, so we can keep our range time reasonable $$. You?
I can understand what you're saying, but I still think it's naive. The 'need' for a gun can take place absolutely anywhere, and when the military WON'T respond, and the police are 'minutes' away at best, and a worker goes ballistic (google the number of news stories where all the workers said "I knew he was going to come in with a gun and start shooting us!"), then relying on them is useless at best, suicidal at worst. And FWIW, don't you think MOST people are going to 'flee' or 'hide' during an attack? some of those folks end up dead. As if someone intending to kill people in an office isn't going to think of looking under a desk. Even on the sheriff department, one thing I'm glad that my dad told my brother and I time and time again was "We are primarily reactive. We usually get there after the damage has been done, so don't rely on someone else to protect you and your friends" I've always taken that to heart, and do to this day. BTW, I'm finding it difficult to understand where it was that I misread your original post?
You mentioned cases with a disgruntled employee shooting up the place. I'm going to guess people go to work much more often where someone does NOT shoot up the place. Sure, I suppose a "need" for a gun could happen anytime, as you put it. But the odds can increase or decrease based on were you're at. For example, the odds of "needing" a gun at a children's dance studio around mostly women and children, are pretty slim. Keeping it concealed at all times would also help. Again, I'm not against concealed carry. I'm for common sense.
I don't entirely disagree with you. I'm a pastor. Spent 17 years on staff at a facility where about 1700 people worship weekly. We've never had a problem. Of course, the same could be said for the New Life congregation in Colorado Springs where a gunman came in and shot several people, killing one, I think and wounding several others. Fortunately, a volunteer security guard shot the attacker. Most congregations don't have security guards. Were such an attack to have occurred at our facility, we would either be waiting for the police to arrive, or counting on responsible folks practicing concealed carry. If it's the latter, the body count is likely to be much higher. Same with shopping at the mall or at the movies with your family. I am NOT leaving the safety of my family up to folks who may take 10+ minutes to respond, and then only upon knowing what kind of threat they face inside. IMO, the 'common sense' is to not depend on someone-- who may or may not be there-- to defend yourself or those around you at a time when literally seconds count.
Surprisingly in the state of Georgia, with some of the most lenient gun laws, you can't legally carry into a church. I should add though that repealing that law is being discussed.
I hear ya, Chris. Difference of opinions, no worries. If I feel I need a gun to take my family to the movies, I sure as hell am not going to the movies. There are people to the far right of gun laws, and thats fine. It helps combat those at the far left. Its like Chicken Little vs. Snow White.
And I guess that brings us back to the original point of divergence. I rarely *feel* like I need a gun, but I also recognize that I never *feel* like I'm going to need spare tire, yet there's always one in my car just in case. FWIW, I've been carrying for 27 years, and during that time, I've pulled my gun on another human a total of ZERO times. Been close on a couple of occasions, but have always diffused things b4 they got out of hand. I have drawn on dogs twice while jogging, but never fired. All that to say, you're not dialoguing with someone looking for a fight.
Just a bad day. He fired one of the guys out front right before I walked out there that night... just to fire someone. Nice guy too and didn't deserve that. That torque me off a little bit. I usually don't cause trouble. Truth be told I try to avoid it. Cruel, arrogant people get under my skin though with their love of power. I've gotten into a few boss's faces over the years with that attitude and enjoyed giving them a taste of their own medicine. 5 boss's off the top of head in the last 30 years. Surprisingly... I've never been fired or even threatened to be fired for it. Two of them did go to their head boss's to whine about it but were told they would get fired long before I would got fired. All's they accomplished were to get there butts chewed twice that day !! These were 2 different jobs. Got a little bonus from one head boss and the other pulled me from what we were doing and gave me a cushy job for a couple days to rub it in to the other dork while he had to sweat in the heat and redid the crew's screw up. After he got done fixing his screw up... he was informed I was the boss of the crew. Come to think of it... a raise, a bonus and promotion... I really need to get in my boss's faces more often. The heck with avoiding trouble !!! Tim
Oh man I don't even know where to begin. I've fired so many people in my years for a variety of reasons. Its tough because it's seasonal, doesn't pay much and usually younger employees that don't qu30ite have everything figured out just yet. One employee really had a thing for me/or a psychological disorder or something. Would always be calling me honey, asking if I needed anything, hungry, thirsty, etc.... just a little weirder than the usualy conversation. Got worse as the season went on and she was getting too personal and talking like an employee shouldnt. So I had a chat with her, told her just come do her job and stop all the chit chat and questions etc... Walked into my office the next day and she was head to toe completely naked sitting on my desk sucking on a sucker. Said something like I've been waiting for you darling lol. Never gave her the slightest inclination of any type of flirting or anything like that at all. She was just psycho. Also had people playing golf and locking the clubhouse instead of working. Having a party in clubhouse after closed, stealing beer, drinking beer on job, stealing money, babysitting while working, sitting on ass watching tv, driving 30k machines in ponds, giving away free golf, arguing with me(biggest mistake), etc.... its endless
Not every workplace allows one to carry. For example, where I work, I'm not supposed to even carry a pocket knife or multi-tool. Yes, one can argue that it's better to be prepared and run the risk of being fired vs the risk of being killed. However, that's a personal choice one needs to make. In regards to outside the workplace concealed carry. I do. Not because I feel threatened, or the "need" to. It's there, just in case. One can not always predict when it will be necessary. But, one can take precautions to reduce the threat level by being aware. Even so, there's always that chance that something may happen. Some people carry pocket knives, or seat belt cutters in the event of needing them. Same with a cell phone, you know, for "in case of an emergency" (wasn't that the original statement so many said they got it for?). Others carry a handgun for "in case of an emergency." Nearly everyone I know whom does hopes they never have to use it, but they carry it in the event they may need to.
