"You do not want to wax any servings, except maybe crossbow center servings." Is this true? I've been doing that for years, I was not aware of any issues. Anyone want to school me? Added tip, don't want until a month before season to order strings, ABB has a couple weeks backlog...not their fault, all mine for waiting too long.
Was talking to the guy at my bow shop about new strings. He looked at mine, which are 2 yo factory set, and shook his head and said, yeah those factory strings aren't that great (with visible contempt). LOL. They look brand new, but he apparently isn't a fan of stock Hoyt strings. Quoted me 150 dollars to replace with his customs.
I think the thinking goes like this... Waxing really helps keep fibers laid down, but wax also holds dirt and grit. Based on the materials for serving, the fibers are less in need of being laid down, and you don't want dirt/grit in the serving. I think there was a lot of info covered in one of the relatively recent Jay Scott Outdoors podcasts (Ep 693 or 694 maybe). John Dudley probably has covered this a number of times too, just not recalling a recent mention.
Just replaced my string for the first time in 6 years. this year i picked up on shooting before i was maybe 500 arrows a summer. so its not like i had many rounds through my string. but if the sting has frays then i would look into a new one.
I used to replace them yearly, however I have done a 180....I can get 3 years out of todays materials and they still look and stay in spec.
I normally do it after 3 years of no unnatural wear is showing. With proper waxing and shoot in time with certain strings these days there are many great brands that exist out there that are reliable. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
