the tree you're in will blow over? You'd have to really be unlucky but I think about it when my tree starts to really sway. We've all see those huge trees that have blown over. How much would it suck to be tied to a tree that is crashing down to the forest floor? Just something for you guys to think about the next time the wind is really blowing. Btw...I've seen some of the biggest bucks of my life while hunting strong winds. Thats why I keep taking my chances.
I have 2 stand on a piece of property that had a microburst happen a few months back, and the huge tree right next to one stand fell over and missed my tree by a few feet. And the other stand across the field, 6 of the large trees around it are broken off halfway up. I can't even hunt there this year because I have to get my chainsaw in there and cut all of them up.
But how do you figure on getting a shot off when you're blowing around like that? I've always found it better to hunt from the ground in high winds, the wind camoflages your movement and sound.
You say that but I couldn't find the post one of the guys here on the forum had a tree fall down and his stand was on that tree. Had pics too if I can find the link I will post it
I've had the same thoughts! But, I have to say that the swaying caused by the wind doesn't bother me nearly as bad as the cracking / creaking sound that you sometimes get when the tree bends. Now THAT is a disturbing sound. My mind always assumes the progression is "swaying --> creaking --> cracking --> falling" and I'm only 1 step away from "timberrrrrrrr!" But seriously, the microbursts are crazy. Last year we had a large tree in our backyard get blown down, even though every tree surrounding it was perfectly fine and undamaged by the storm. The one that fell wasn't rotten or damaged, either... just unlucky.
Yeh I hadnt hunted that stand for quite a while though, and when I went one day, thats what I found. i may have been fine if I was at the top of the tree, but Im glad I wasnt there to find ouf.
