I know the oil based stain I used this fall said optimal was 70, takes longer @ 50, no drop below 32 for a week. Painting in your garage?
Not my garage.......a property I have to get listed (interior room). It's probably 30deg. in the house....and won't get above 50 in there for a while.
I've always used 50 degrees as the benchmark. Can you get some kind of temporary heat for a couple days?
That's likely what I'll do, NY. The space is really small I need to paint (which is the only reason "I" am taking it on!).
How about a heated room with a cold wall? I want to paint my basement wall that butts against an unheated attached garage. The wall is kind of cold, but the basement itself is heated.
I've been in the Industrial and Architectural Coatings industry for over 20 years so my advice to you is..... Depends. MOST latex paint is more temp. tolerant and can be used down to 35 degrees SURFACE temp. Even tho it says 50, this is just what the paint manf. puts on the label to cover themselves. At 35 degrees, the drying/curing process slows wayyy down. It may take days to cure, rather than hours, but once it does cure you will be ok. IF the temperature is expected to get below freezing, and you are painting in sub-50 degree temps, stop painting 8 hours before the temps fall below freezing. DO NOT use oil-based paint below 50 degrees surface temperature. The curing process is different for oil-based paint and once your reach critical recoat time on it it will crack like a spiderweb. If you do use a heater, do not turn it off when you leave if temps are expected to get below freezing or the paint will freeze on the walls and you will have a mess the first time you heat the house back up. Hope this helps
