...you guys put up your whitetail stands? In the past i've done it in August. This year I might just put them up this Spring since I'm always out scouting anyway. I've left some out year round before but that seems to be kinda hard on them. What do you guys do?
Generally I put them up in August. I have one up now to use as an observation stand. I'll be moving it in late summer.
I like to get all my stand hung my the first of June. I do most of my scouting on foot in Jan,Feb, and March. I don't like to hang stands with is really hot out. I also do not do any scouting on foot after June, but I do a lot of scouting with a spotting scope from a distance in the summer.
Around the first of Aug. I like them to be out at least 1 month prior to season opening but I only hang about 3-4 stands...I use a climber most of the time. I do prefer a hang on for an early morning stand or when the temps are still in the 90's.
If I was hunting a certain buck and going to hunt the early season I'd probably be putting up a stand early to mid summer going by the sign I found after the snow melts. If I was going to hunt the rut only I don't see how putting up a stand now would benefit as much. But maybe I'll learn something here.
typically july/August but also going to put a few up in the coming weeks - mainly because they are ladder stands - so they will have all year to get used to them
I'm not sure either Schultzy... Last year while putting up a rut stand during mid August I kicked up two bucks (I was making way too much damn noise with my stand) that were bedding about 70 yards from my tree. I never saw them again during the season which is not surprising. I wonder if I would have done less damage putting up this stand earlier like during the Spring...even if I kicked a few deer out of the woods? Also in this case I don't believe deer would be bedding as close to this particular spot this time of year vs Summer time.
I have a ladder stand already up. I won't put the hang-on up until late july. I have a climber though that I use most often.
Depends on where I'm hunting... usually not until a week or two before season starts on the family property in Northern MN, but around home... I get to the tree I want to put it in, I hang it, and settle in for the hunt..
My dad and I tend to leave our stands up year round. We have several ladder stands that are kind of a pain in the butt to take down and put back up every year, but we do have portable stands as well that we put up. We usually go out and check the woods for deer sign, check the stands, and move some stands around mid-July.
I really don't hang mine until August sometime. Usually after I have observed the deer movement. Seeing as I don't have land where I have hunted every year. I do not like to have them out too early as weather and sun beats them up.
I try to have them done buy the first of August but if something else catches my I through 1 up in season.
