So what conditions need to take place in order for you to hunt low? I find myself hunting higher and higher in terms of elevation and it seems to be paying off in terms of bucks sightings and opportunities, but I think I might be missing something by not hunting the low grounds from time to time based on the conditions. Some basic questions. How do falling thermals affect your stand placement? Does the wind cause you to hunt low? Times of the year you hunt lower than normal? Thanks for your thoughts all.
I hunt "low" when the bucks are checking scrapes. I find almost all the scrapes in the valleys. Between benches, logging roads and valleys this would cover 95% of the scrapes in the hilly areas I hunt. I would say 70% of them are in the bottoms.
Thanks for the info buckeye. I found one spot last year, early in the pre-rut where bucks were coming in low cruising at the bottom of a stream valley. I always seemed to be 70-80 yards off where they were cruising because I was hunting on the top 20% of the landscape. Got me to thinking I was off base with my knowledge and needed to get some more info as to why they were travelling in that manner.
