I was walking to my stand one early morning and jumped a couple deer. It was still dark, so I just hunkered down next to a tree. About two minutes later, I heard the wheeze, for about 5min. I got my call and started an occasional grunt. I have the primos call with a grunt, bleat, and wheeze in one call. I wasnt sure which one to use. do they normally respond to any of these in this situation?....
so i sat for about another 30-45min until it got lighter out and I could see some movement in the distance but could not make it out.....wondering if he came back to check out who was grunting at him.
I know its not the rut yet, but i was trying to imitate the short grunt that says, "hey, im over here".
sorry for such a long post. thoughts?

It's really tough to know exactly which one to do at a certain time but when i grunt after ive jumped deer ive brought bucks within 10-15 feet of me ...no kidding but that was peak rut up in maine tho..Ive never really had any deer respond to a doe bleet or a wheeze in any part of the season. Last season I also had a buck in mass starting hitting a tree pretty good after I was pretty aggressive with the grunt but never came into stand!!!

I usually only break out the deer calls during moments of complete desperation.

They just never work for me.

I have far better luck waiting silently in ambush.

My last 2 bucks both came in about 75 yards away and I grunted them in. The year after that, I was grunting at a buck to get a better look at him and had a 135" buck answer back from behind me. I don't want to talk about that ending....

In my area, I've got a ton of bucks and I see broken racks all over the place so they seem to be aggressive. A lot of it just depends on your situation and what you think they will respond too. If the buck is working his way toward me, I'm silent. Why make him look at me or for me. But if he's angling away, then I want to get their attention.

That wheeze was a "damn you make alot of noise getting in your stand" from the deer.
    Try one of these!
    It works no $hit!

whenever i grunt i get these little over aggressive 2 year old bucks with busted off antlers coming into me. i usually only try grunting when i can see the deer and its worked about 50/50. one thing i've done pretty religiously after night hunts walking out of the woods every 10 steps or so i grunt so any deer in the area don't bust just from hearing noise. it really only works if you're walking out up wind of where the deer are though.

This is better than SNL.....Get out of the woods.
Save your breathe on the grunt call....all the bucks with busted antlers don't care either....go home sleep & hunt tomarrow....unless you step on the deer they probably won't notice....the woods come alive at night.... with animals you only hear about in the movies....Racoons,coyotes,fox,skunks,owls,roosting thunder chickens and the like.....pretty creepy stuff!
    Happy Halloween...I mean...Hunting
    Good Luck to All,
The Never Tiring, my $hit looks kinda like deer poop!

Only in the bedroom and when I run up the stairs really fast before she changes her mind... otherwise when deer hunting... it is better to do neither like Fran said.

Seriously... the only call that has worked some what is the CAN. I will carry that one and use it if a buck is in sight but heading the wrong way.

maybe some sasquatches and chupacabras too.. scary:eek: the only reason i do this is because a couple seasons back i had a wide mature 8pt coming into me when 2 squirrels fighting in a tree made quite a ruckus and the buck spooked and took off. even if it is just a waste of breathe it helps me feel a little more at ease

I killed my biggest buck using a stick banging it against a tree to imitate rattling.
As for the question at hand I'm in the same boat as quickie.

Maybe you will get that wide 8 that ran from those squirrels fighting this year.
    Good Luck!

Try This next time you shoot a deer!
Grunt immediatly after the shot and the deer will slam on the brakes and it will be over.
    This does work!
I've done this ever since and it is remarkable how it calms the animal down.
    Rather than Blazing a trail!
I know if the shot is correct it does not matter, however, if this is done,
I can assure you recovery will be much easier.
    And therefore less coyote bait!!!!
They will lock'em up after they hear that grunt. Bucks & Does alike!
You have to have your grunt call ready for sure to do it right!
    I strapped to shooting forearm.
    Bet it works!

If I jump any deer while walking through the dark woods on the way to my stand in the morning, I usually just keep walking at a steady pace. Don't rush, just walk with intent. Get into your stand, and get settled quickly. Be still, and usually the deer will think it was just another animal passing through, and most times will settle down and stay in the area. Deer are curious, and will probably circle around from downwind to investigate. I find if you stop, or walk slowly, you are mimicking a predator, and the deer will usually spook and leave the area. I would not use a call in this situation, as this would just draw more attention to yourself. I only use calls to lure deer in when they are out of range closer to the rut. Good luck.

Also, I agree with SilentSling. After shooting a deer, I will let out a loud grunt, it usually stops them dead in their tracks. I don't use a call, just let out a loud "muurrppp" and they'll stop, look around, and drop nearby.

I don't use calls unless its during the rut(try rattling along with the rest of the noises)I sometimes grunt if a buck is getting out of range, sometimes I will grunt and they might come back.. The other day I tried to grunt a spike in from 60 yards trying to get him in shooting distance, he didn't want anything to do with it. It works better with calling in mature bucks.

Grunt calls and such work best when you have a healthy buck/doe ratio. I usually won't call blindly unless its early season. By the time the rut rolls around, most bucks IMO, just simply do not care enough to investigate the sound unless he's in a real ornery mood to begin with. Right time, right place sort of thing.

However, as with rattling, I try to stay away from the real deep, aggressive rattling to minimize the chances of spooking a buck. I'd rather call in every little buck in the woods with the hope of attracting that big buck instead of scaring everything off by being too dominant.

The best call I've used to date is the little short Flextone grunt call. For some reason, the tone of that call works very well in my area and I've had more success calling bucks in with this call than any other.

Not much for rattling but I always have my grunt call on me. I've grunted in numerous bucks with it. Both blind calling and ones I have spotted just out of range.
