When did you start talking inches instead of points?

I started talking inches probably about 3 years ago. I'd never really seen a buck scored and how it all added together before then, so I had no way of accurately guessing what a buck scored. Now that I've seen many deer scored, and know how to score myself, I have a better understanding and feel comfortable in using the "lingo". I agree with everyone else in that it makes it easier for other people to visualize what you saw.

I talk points. big 6, small 6, wide 6, tall 6, spread was past the ears, spread looked to be 15 inches ect.

For me and most of my hunting buddies, this is good enough.

A couple others want to know inches, not for saying wow nice deer but, to say...mine was a 12x what was yours! I could care less about the inches since each buck of mine big or small is about the hunt, these other buddies are not so interested in that. That is the only time i dislike talking in inches. Seems like most folks on the board talk inches in a good sense rather than the later which I enjoy seeing.

Talking inches does give you a clearer sense of how big the buck is.

Yup, I thought in terms of points until I joined the boards. In fact, scoring deer was some wierd mythical science to me for a long time with G2s and H4s etc. It's all part of learning this fun sport.

Well, when I talk about my first bow-buck, I just call it a ten point, 'cause it was a major case of ground shrinkage. The goofy thing scored 73 inches!

I started using inches probably back in the early to mid 90's, before then it was shoot anything with horns, so a point count was sufficient but once a QDM type program was implemented in the area, a different way to judge the size of the bucks was required and a point and width estimate really didn't cut it anymore.......

Inches are a way to make sure everyone is talking apples to apples instead of apples to what the heck are you talking about.......but of course the guy that saw the giant 12 pointer with a 24" spread every year is now seeing a giant 12 pointer that is well over 200".

so you saying... I shouldn't believe the guy I work with who usually sees two world record book bucks a year and numerous 8X8s, 8X9s with an occaisional 9X9 that all have 25 - 35 inch spreads. ;) :)
